Never done this before.
Right now it’s black with magpul FDE furniture.
I was buying paint at sherwin Williams today and saw they had some Krylon spray paint on sale for $3/can
I bought Hunter green and classic gray.
I’m thinking about doing the first layer green and then using pine needles to add in the gray.
Anyone have a better idea? TIA

Just did one of mine.
I used Krylon camouflage spray paint.
Gun was black. Sprayed it all khaki
Then a few stripes of brown
Then used an oak leaf and sprayed some olive.
Thought it turned out well.

Did you paint the barrel? My AR is the M16 style so a lot of the barrel is exposed.
And I’m trying to figure out the base layer color…..green or gray.
I could always buy a third color I guess

I did not.
Pulled the hand guard off and painted it separately. Then covered the barrel when painting the upper and lower.

Did you sand the gun before painting? How about a clear coat of paint after?

It’s not my rifle, but I’m currently accruing parts to build one.

There are tons of DIY tutorials on YouTube related to rattle can painting your gun. Lots of different way to do it. I like the sponge paint technique.

I've painted a half dozen guns with spray paint. Tape up everywhere you don't want paint to get and start spraying. I like leaving large tan/light patches on them. It breaks them up good in the woods. I make stencils with paper plates and use those to add in whatever leaves or stick patterns.

At a minimum:
- close dust cover
- fill in mag well
- cover optic glass if installed

I'm a huge fan of painting anything shiny.
Alumahyde is awesome for this if you want it half way permanent.

No, just painted and no clear coat.

You can buy a stencil package from freedom stencils
I use the flat Kyrlon camo colors. I use blue masking tape to tape up everything I don’t want paint.

Couple of mine. I take fine steel wool and hit to smooth out just a touch after a few days.
I go darker paint first most of the time.

Use matte paint, don't paint anything that actually has moving parts that matter or glass, stencils available on Etsy work well but dish soap works well too.
I'll upload the others later, something is going wrong with imgr

How do you use this?

Don’t foam the dish soap.
Pour the dish soap all over your rifle in weird patterns.
Then spray paint the entire rifle.
Once it dries, rinse it off. The painted over dish soap will come off.
I’ve never heard of it done for rifles, but movie prop effects use a similar process with toothpaste. It creates an “aging” effect. Usually around edges and body lines where items would typically wear off due to heavy use.
“Battle worn” if you will.
