I def. have rats in the attic. I’m ready to burn the place down.

Paid 300 bucks for someone to come out recently to inspect the house. He told me where they most likely are coming in. The pipes/vents on the roof. Im going to seal it off tomorrow.

What is the best solution to handling this? I have an orkin contract but they seem lazy to combat this. I want this to go away ASAP!!

Anyone ever have to deal with this? It’s an old house and about 3 feet of the ground.

Will getting the attic sprayed with the foam insulation solve my problems?

I don’t know why it wouldn’t. You might have to use a larger bucket.

Yep.

I just use old school Victor rat traps. There is an art to it, though.

1) I use Slim Jim beef jerky as the bait. Make sure to rub the oil from the beef jerky all over the trap so the smell really gets out there.

2) When setting the traps, make sure the trigger mechanism is going towards the truss, because rodents tend to run along edges. Their sight is horrible, so they go by feel most of the time. If you set the traps just out in the open, they will still go to the bait, but they may take a different angle to the bait and the trap won't get the rat.

3) What did the inspector say about your soffits?

4) Spraying the attic w/ foam probably won't help.

I Had a big wood rat in my tractor, used a victor trap and peanut butter. Dead.

Id trap a few, then throw poison blocks out in the attic. My house has mice from time to time. Its a recurring deal. I kill them then new ones move in.

Hell i caught one under the kitchen sink a month or so ago.

Use a trash can to make the trap instead of a bucket

There have been a couple of rat threads in the past couple of months on here. There is also a YouTube guy thatvreviews rat and mouse traps. He found the walk the plank traps work the best

They sell these blue pellets that are like crack to rats/mice/roaches. Throw them all over the attic. Throw them under the house (unless you have a dog or cat that could get under there). The pellets dehydrate the rodents. They literally shrivel up into dust. Best part is they’re designed to dry out the carcass in the process so no stink.

DO NOT THROW RANDOM POISON UP THERE. You will end up with dead rotting rats that stink up the whole house

Does the electrocution traps work?

He said they are getting in through the pipe things on the roof. He was 100% sure of it. To me it looked like an infestation but said not even close. I would hate to see what an infestation looks like.

He also pointed out some foam around the ac wires being ate at in the attic as well.

I’m sure it’s like 6 or so but it feels like a million to me. He pointed out a couple spots in the House I need to seal up as well to make sure they don’t get into the actual house which I have seen some evidence over time they they def been in the house.

I am a clean person so it’s just hard processing that I got this frickers in the attic.

The attic is more like a crawl space. Old southdowns house built in the 60s. A garbage can is not practical

I want to burn it down every time I get into my 8th beer. This is not my fortay of dealing with shite.

What is the name of the pellets? I’ll make it rain in the attic and under the house

Yep I know your pain. My college house in university hills that I now rent out was/is the same.

Use the blue pellets. Keep victor traps set under sink in cabinets and shite. Don’t put them up in the attic.

You want to hear them go off. Otherwise you’ll end up with a rotting corpse in a trap you forgot to check.

Get a house cat.

Trust me, if they’re in the attic, they’ve been inside the house.....

Electrocution traps definitely work. Just make sure you're checking them everyday if you use them, because those rats decompose frigging fast in this heat.

If they are getting through the pipes (which I almost never see....btw, I've been in the pest control business for 20 years), then just use gutter downspout screens over them to keep them out.

If the pipes are large enough, just roll the screen tight and shove it in the vent. If the pipe is too small, just zip tie the screen on to the exterior of the pipe.

Not sure on the name. My pest guy gave them to us. Electrocution traps don’t work. You need a combo of Pellets/victor traps/and a cat

Just having a cat in the house will deter activity

They cant stay in there forever. Water, limited food. They have to come out eventually. Cats roam at night. Just a thought that worked for me.

Two words------snap traps.

Don't put out poison or you'll be smelling decaying rodents for weeks on end---------don't ask how I know this. That said, it was a quick lesson learned many years ago.

Bait snap traps with peanut butter, tie them off to something so they won't travel when the rodents are caught----and they will if not tied off.

Check them at least every other day and remove any rats killed. Then do your best to seal off where they are getting into the attic in the first place.

If you have those flex pipe ducts for A/C, rats will sometimes eat holes through the foil and insulation and get into the air ducts. You will wind up A/C'ing your attic as they eat holes in the duct work.

Oh, and this goes for squirrels too.
