Get on gearscan everyday for a couple of months and get a great jacket for half off.

You can find Marmot Precips for like 50 bucks.

Patagonia Torrentshells are great.

Unfortunately I just got an Arcteryx Beta AR, so I won't be able to afford (hopefully won't need) another rain shell for 10 years. Before that my go to shell was a Mountain Hardwear Stretch Cohesion.

I have the Frogg Togg Toadz and I love it..light weight and very comfortable. Leaps and bounds better than the original frogg toggs

I miss my goretex and bag more than any piece of gear. I still have my field jacket and most uni's.

is gore tex the way to go?

Sometimes it's needed for me. I have 2. One is a North Face, simple raincoat and my arcteryx shell is goretex and there have been times my raincoat wasn't enough.

saw some Helly Hansons at the backpacker, they were a bit heavy for what i was looking for, but they were good looking and the salesman had nothing but good things to say about them.

also all the Helly Hanson and Marmot jackets are 50% off at the backpacker right now.... soooooo go buy shite

also all their winter jackets are 50% off.

I had DryQ and I think it is fine unless you're doing an expedition or something. You can always retreat it if it begins to lose its DWR. Mine never stopped beading, FWIW.

DryQ Elite is the MH version of the newer Gore Tex fabrics. If MH ever works out their sizing and quality control, they'll probably overtake some of the larger companies.

A lot of companies had beef with Gore Tex because Gore Tex puts a ton of restrictions on outdoor companies. That is why MH developed Dry Q/Dry Q Elite and Patagonia developed H2NO. I don't know if they care, but Gore Tex is certainly missing out on a shite ton of fratty guy and couch mountaineer money.

I've been a fan of Goretex since my military days. I've seen the new stuff but haven't tried any. The Grundens are nice when its pouring, but damn they are hot. Simms has a good lightweight Goretex shell.
