School will be starting in 2-3 weeks here and I happened to have the day off today. Decided to do a spontaneous paddle trip with the boy.
Put in at Vicksburg city front and paddled to letourneau landing. 13 miles fighting a south wind all the way.

Hell, yeah.

Took my nephews at that age and they've long moved off but still remember.

I’d say the water was low to mid 80s. It felt good. The boy enjoyed it for sure.

Looks like a good time, being on the river for work i have seen a lot of canoes recently. Please carry a handheld vhf on ch 13 just in case.

That's really cool. I however have a healthy fear of the Mississippi River and it's current and would barely ride in a modern boat on it, much less a canoe!

The first through paddlers (itasca to the gulf) are starting to make it down here. A lot of them do carry handheld radios to communicate with locks upstream and to monitor traffic/announce their presence once they get closer to busier ports like Baton Rouge/New Orleans.

A lot of people do, but I think it should be respect more than fear. The main thing is to be smart, be prepared, and don’t take unnecessary chances/risks. Weather, traffic, river levels, experience/skill level, etc… should all factor into one’s decision on whether or not to go.

Yeah I have met quite a few guys doing it. Had an instance on the upper Mississippi coming out of a lock and there was a canoe not listening to the radio was almost bad. Met this guy last year doing an impressive paddle. LINK

Interesting. I wonder why he decided to go down the Tenn-Tom vs. going out the mouth of the MS?

I hosted the Rediscover North America crew for a few days on their way up the river. You may notice the LSU hat on one of the paddlers (Winchell Delano). He said that was the only hat he could find in south Louisiana that had MN Vikings colors.

I’m guessing a little less commercial traffic and cut off a few miles instead of the paddling the ditch to mobile. That’s determined to paddle n/b but a pretty awesome adventure. Have met some college kids from the northeast that built their own boat and sailed it all the way down for college credit. Would love to do it one day, the St. Paul down to Hannibal,mo is not what you would think the Mississippi is and the weather is usually great.
