Question for experienced birders.

Would you expect any unusual bird activity behavior when the weather changes in the next few days such as new arrivals?
I recall goose hunting in Cameron Parish near what is now Crain Brothers off of LA 27 the morning that the 1997 ice storm arrived. Pintails were decoying is the decoy rig. Limit was one at that time but we had four limits of geese and about fifteen ducks in short order. The doors of the trucks were frozen shut.

my best hunt was the morning an ice storm hit. The three of us killed our 6 pintail and 12 mallards in an hour. It was unbelievable. 3 different groups of hunters went to our blind that day with pretty similar results.

They are showing up in droves in the cenla area and east.

I remember days like that back in the 80's in Pecan Island. Back when we had the point system and pintails were 10 points. Many limits were killed. That's all I'm going to say.

1997 I was hunting in freezing rain and sleet, the widgeon were appearing out of the clouds and were easy. The bean field was froze solid and I drove my truck across the field to the blind.

Absolutely as the barometric pressure changes feeding activity will change movement will change so if you have feeders put them out with food hulled sunflower seeds suet black sunflower seeds peanuts, Birds are constantly moving that’s what it’s always ideal to have an evergreen in your property so birds have cover in the winter.

You are probably right as I thought that pintail limit was only one. What I do recall about the ice storm is that the pintail were much more numerous that all other species combined as well as the prolonged power outages in the area.

New flocks of brown headed cowbirds and red winged blackbirds are destroying my seed supply. The Cardinals seem really put out.

had to run up to tensas this morning to do freeze preps... saw more mallards from campsite than i saw all year hunting. combined.

Last Saturday I saw more ducks in my field than I’ve seen at one time in 10+ years.
And probably more than I’ve seen in the last 5 yrs combined.
Just sayin...

With what I saw last week I would pay the ticket. It would just be like out of state hunting trip!
Can’t do with the time off though, nor the confiscations…

Just added Fox Sparrow to my lifer list. There was another sparrow out there yesterday that I could not identify. Resembled white throated.

Picked up a 40# bag of black oil sunflower seed Saturday. Over half is gone now with only two feeders out. Cardinals are fat. Black birds/cow birds look like a Hitchcock movie out there. The gold finches are really sucking hind tit tho. They’re overwhelmed by the blackbirds.

LA really needs to move the season back a month. Even hunting two weeks later would be nice. Federally you can hunt ducks until the end of February.

Mentioned this in another thread this morning. Saw a large amount of Spoonbills on the lake here. They rafted up and swam in tight circles inside the raft.
