Question about a turkey gun
Posted on 3/17/21 at 6:57 pm

So, here is a long story short. I want to kill a turkey and I haven’t hunted one before. One of my baws is gonna put me on one. The only shotgun I have is an old Remington 1100 that my granddaddy gave me. Barrel says “FULL”. I assume that means full choke. But it only shoots 2 3/4” shells. My question is should I buy a pump (or semiauto) that shoots 3” (where I can adjust the choke), or just buy some 2 3/4” turkey shells and see how my old 1100 patterns? TIA.

With tss ammo, it really doesnt matter these days. A 410 with tss will drop a turkey at 40yds easy. Pattern your gun, know its range. It will kill a turkey.

You can kill turkeys just fine with it. There are some 2 3/4 turkey loads but inside of 30yds or so you’ll be fine with #4 or #6 high brass. Pretty sure nitro is making 2 3/4” tss loads now but I don’t know if you should shoot them in that old gun or not.

Borrow buddies turkey gun.
I killed several with my Papas 1100, 2 3/4, full choke.

I’ve shot it plenty of times, just not in the last 15 years. I haven’t had much time to hunt since I’ve had kids. Maybe send it to my local gunsmith to get it oiled up and checked out, then go from there?

I wouldn’t worry about a gunsmith if it shot prior and has just been sitting up. If you can operate it and dry fire without issue I’d spray some oil in it and rock and roll. Guns are good for 100 yrs inside a house.

start looking for ammo - any kind of appropriate ammo - asap.
I was on a shoot last month where I couldn't find bird load in advance. The preserve said they had some, come on over...
It was utter crap. It jammed my benelli nova every third round (never seen it jam before except once) and was some crap "coated" 8 shot that couldn't erase a chalk board.
This was primarily my fault for expecting that BS to work, but beware of what folks are trying to sell you these days and get your correct ammo asap.

For those who have eaten wild killed turkey, I've alway heard it was way better than a store bought bird.
Can anyone vouch for this? If so, I may have to go out for a hunt this year.

Many a turkey were killed before 3 1/2 magnums, tss, and screw in choke tubes
Shoot your gun at 30 yards and see if the pattern is sufficient
Just know the limitations of your gun and don’t try to reach out and touch that gobbler that’s hung up at 50 yards of your gun isn’t capable of it
Missing a turkey is one thing, but crippling one is on another level

I put two breast a buddy gave me into a gumbo with some wood ducks and venison sausage and my family food critics said it was the best one I’ve ever made. My buddy cuts his in strips and stir fries them with veggies Asian style. Says it’s delicious.
Hoping to get my first this weekend, headed to South Texas for the opener. Was able to keep an eye out on Midway and find some shells.

I cut my breasts into chic FIL a nugget size and soak them in buttermilk and hot sauce or in pickle juice and ranch. Batter with a crispy chicken fry mix.
I also recently ground the breasts and mixed in some ground bacon, green onion, and seasoning to make some pretty good pan sausage.
Also cut it into small pieces to blacken and mix in with pasta
Legs I pressure cook and use in gumbo or soups

Something like this. Fried in peanut oil is the best way to eat it. Everything else is mediocre.

Go listen to the new Mossy Oak Gamekeepers podcast. They have the guys from Apex Ammo on talking about TSS. Talking about putting 250-300 #9 pellets from a 20ga. in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards.

It's ok , you have to baby it . Kind of like snow geese . Not as good as store bought , depends on how you cook it .

Wild turkey meat is great. If you don't want it, I'll take it.

Can confirm the TSS shell is a bad mofo. 20ga. at 30yds from last weekend for youth opener in GA got her done with a little 2 for 1 action.
