I need to get a gift for a friend who lives in Jamaica - a high-quality fishing kayak.

a)Can anyone recommend one?

b)How do I get it to Jamaica?

TIA

Depends on if it paddle or pedal.

Which is "higher quality" - or is it just personal preference and you can get high quality versions of either?

Hobie is top of the line and can pedal and or paddle. But you are looking at like $2,500 minimum.

If its meant to be a fishing kayak, pedals are almost always going to be better...especially if he's planning to fish offshore.

I'm partial to Hobie and most familiar with their lineup. Pro Angler and Outback are their 2 best fishing models.

Perhaps a dumb question but, Jamaica is fairly developed, do they not have any paddleshops there that carry name brand kayaks? I'd imagine freight plus would be crazy high to ship one there, no?

Not a dumb question, but you might be surprised how slim the pickings are for stuff like this.

Thank you.

So, here's the Outback. It has a trolling motor also?

How durable are those underwater fins? Like, if the unit receives "normal" use, can they be expected to last for years, or is it one of those things where they're king of finicky and you can expect them to break...and if they do break, you would be screwed in Jamaica in terms of service?

No, it has a pedal drive in the cockpit area and a rudder on the rear of the kayak for steering. Does not come with a trolling motor, although I've seen a few people add a Torqueedo on Outbacks before. Torqueedo is a pricey aftermarket electric motor that mounts on the stern. Not sure about Jamaica, but in the US if you add an electric motor then you have to register the kayak just like a boat.

Pretty durable. I've had a Hobie Pro Angler for 3.5 years now and it gets heavy use. Original fins are still fine. I did have to replace one of the metal masts/spines in one fin because I bent it when I got hung up on some oyster shells in shallow water on a rough weather day. Fairly cheap and easy fix for DIY type of people. Besides that, only maintenance I've done on the drive is rinsing it with a hose after a saltwater trip.

The newer Hobies have kick-up fins where the fins have a hinge that will retract them backwards if you hit something under the water, so less odds off bending a mast like I did. I think the kick-up fins started with the 2020 models. Mine's a 2018

According to the Hobie website, they don't show any dealers in Jamaica. Closest ones I saw were one in the Cayman Islands and one in Dominican Republic. So it might be a pain in the arse if you have to ship off the drive to a dealer to work on. But most things that would break or need repairing are pretty easy to DIY and lots of videos on Youtube.

Just got off the phone with that shop. It's $7500 US! That's like 50% higher than recommended on the Hobie site. I guess that's a supply chain thing? The only other one they have in stock is a Passport 12...which now seems incredibly down market to me now that I know about the good one. Any thoughts?

14 foot with a rudder and self bailing . won a dozen redfish tournaments in fairly open waters. going down wind you lift a paddle catch wind and go.

$7500 for the Outback or PA? Wonder if it would be cheaper to buy it stateside and ship it to Jamaica instead

The Passport is definitely a step down from the Outback or PA. Best advice is go to your local Hobie dealer and see them side by side in person. Most dealers have demo days where you can test different models out on the water

Thanks again for the help on this. I found a place in Ft. Lauderdale where I'm getting the Pro Angler 14 360 for even less than the MSRP on here!

They also made it sound like they ship internationally all the time, so they are suggesting an expediter to handle that.

Again, Tiger Prawn, thanks very much. The guy receiving this in Jamaica is going to be super stoked!
