Doing a little night ride behind the house.

Water is moving them around.

Crossed a canal and immediately smelled something like 30 dogs that have been laying in hay. Drew my pistol and pointed away from the water.

Light lit up a smaller bear sitting up on the levee.

Poor guy must have been worn out from getting out the water, didn't move for a good 15 seconds.

Given I was on a side by side in knee deep water, I didn't press the issue and took off.

That's the second one I've spotted in 5 years. Last one was also in 2016.

Given he was looking at me, and I was looking at him, from a distance of maybe 20ft with a tlr1 in his eyes... No. No it did not look like a garbage bag.

Were you here for great garbage bag thread? Probably 1 of my top 5 of all time.

Another question...do you typically draw your pistol at unfamiliar smells?

I didn't have a flashlight not attached to a gun.

Gun was on my lap.

I was almost stopped in deeper water. Debating whether to keep going or not.

When I smelled that, I figured pissed off boar or coyote den. Didn't expect ol yogi

Yogi decided for me to keep going

FYI - 2016 was three years ago. So you've seen 2 bears in 3 years, not 5.

I carry my pistol in my lap too whether I'm in the woods or driving in the city.

My daughter & I on Fathers day roughly 3yrs ago went down a fire lane in Ocala National Forest.

We had 4 pistols/10 mags AR 5 mags, Scar17 5 mags all loaded up. Jumped out of the truck and set up shop.
She went through everything about as fast as you can pull the trigger.

We loaded up and creeped out real slow. We traveled about 150 yards down the trail and see a black bear maybe 40 yards from us. It stared us down for a minute then busted a move diagonally away from us. That thing had an amazing burst of speed, I was really surprised. Came away from that thinking, I'm not sure I could draw on one if it had the jump on me. Super impressive.

Bears are awesome. Black bear attacks are extremely rare. I think they are cool as hell to have around again. Pumped for a season in the near future.
