Proof Research PXT Barrel

Proof PXT
Barrel starts really slow and progressively speeds up. This creates less barrel wear and more accuracy in high pressure loads. The grooves are also cut smoother. Discrete ballistics says it will be a big deal for subsonic ammo. Subs need a fast twist but the initial push is very hard on the bullet. The gradual increase will be a game changer. Makes sense to me.
What say the OB gun nerds?

Gain twist barrels have been around for long time. I never followed them too much because the juice wasnt worth the squeeze. Its been a while since id seen much about them.

This. They promise a whole lot improvement in something hard to measure over conventional rifling then tend to not deliver anything tangible and fade out. Maybe they’ve figured out a new mouse trap but proof is also probably reeling a little as the carbon barrel fad is losing steam.

So what makes this different is the degree of the speed up. Typical gain twists used to be 1:12-1:7 or something like that. These are like 1:300-1:7. The data from proofs internal testing does look promising and it makes sense. Pretty excited to see the long term external testing.

In 2008, I shot several gain twist barrels in NBRSA short range competition (100-200 yds 6PPC cartridge). Several competitors set world records for accuracy and won multiple championships. I was shooting 20” LV contour barrel, pushing 68 gr bullets 3,275 fps with the goal of a 1-hole group. It worked in benchrest competition, I have zero clue how it will work for the .300 BO shooting subs using a 10”-16” barrel.
IMO, PROOF is taking a 20+ year old concept and hyping/marketing it towards the subsonic shooting discipline. Next step, send barrels to magazine writers and social media influencers who will agree with PROOF’s claims.
I don’t think it’s snake-oil, just another manufacturers hype to increase profit and sales.

The industry just needs to get its story straight. Since the dawn of the creedmoor we’ve been told there is no trade off to a faster twist and the increased magnitude of any pressure spike is negligible.

Sounds like a good sci fi movie

In all fairness, ask the owner of bartlein. He'll tell you the same on gain twist... and if you're right handed, he will probably try to talk you into a left-hand twist. I'm pretty sure he cites over a century old gunsmith work as to why he started tinkering with it.

I'd be interested to see how these work with existing cartridges that get hotrodded into steel cases.
