How big of a generator is needed to do this?

Pretty close. That's an Inverter unit just like the Honda. Quiet as hell but you'll pay for it.
They also make regular generators just like Honda for cheaper.

The Generac XG8000E is one of the highest rated in its size category

Check Tyler Tools online for a great price and free shipping

Generac engines are designed for the application.

Units are categorized as Emergency or Commercial

This unit is Commercial - most of what you see at Sams- wally world, lowes hd etc are emergency class units and built to a lesser standard. For most people if they are cared for they will last

I prefer a unit that is commercial graded-

Powermate 5000/6250 with the Subaru motor. Have had it for about 4 years and leave gas in with Stabil. I crank it about every 6-8 months. First time it takes about 5 pulls and starts, then starts on first pull thereafter. Runs like a champ. Powering a bunch of stuff in my house.

Just a FYI,I had to help 3 people out with that same generator over the last 3 days because of gummed up main jets in the carb. Not saying it is the generators fault but they're just as susceptible to carb faults as the cheapo Briggs and Stratton engines.

Yeah, the maintenance ideas in here are the key. It really does not take much to keep a generator in great shape.

ordered the $999 Generac from Homedepot online. 7500 continuous and peaks at 9350 or so.

I have no idea how to do that, and it scares me anyway, so I just run cords. We did a rotation. Window unit in family room plus fridge and small stuff in day time. Window unit in bedroom, fridge and freezer at night. Leaving the freezer off for the day did not affect anything inside. We made sure not to open it.

NorthStar generators from Northern Tool Co are some good generators. Can get portable generators up to 15KW all with Honda engines. I have a 13KW that can power whatever I need in my house, including my AC. Always run the fuel out and drain the tank. Change oil and filter as per maintenance schedule.

I have the same generator and run it about every three months. Don't forget to put a load on it, not just run the engine. I close the petcock and let it run itself out of gas each time. It cranked second start. I put a lil stabil and seafoam in it. Only bad thing is its a pullcrank and I almost broke the rope and wouldve had to repair it in he dark.

Have a Honda 3000 inverter....I give it 5 stars.

I can run my computers, charge iPads and run flat screen tvs with no problem....Best thing is it cranks with one turn of the key.
