whats the outlook on beef? Not sure how true it is but I heard cattlemen are taking a beating on cattle at the sale. If a man had nice fenced in acreage with really good grass, would it be worth picking up some heifers to take a chance on things picking back up by winter?

Like how many?
Like how many acres?
Not a cow guy but between expenses and world I bet you won’t lose much on the deal.

You will likely learn your fence is not as nice as you think it is

Can’t make money on cattle looking 1 year down the road. You have to have the acreage and ability to look 10-15 years ahead.

Unless, you want to nickel and dime it for 5-7 years while working your arse off. Even then you have to have the acreage for the long haul to hit 100-125 cows.

I know a guy who is buying live #1500 steers on a backhaul from the packing houses in Kansas for 95c a pound delivered back to MS. He's then taking them to a local processor and having them cut up and frozen and he's selling shares to his neighbors. They're doing it as a hedge against the packing houses all shutting down in the next month or so.

One thing to consider is that down here, our pastures have the highest protein content in the winter, not the summer. So if you're gonna get into the business, you might want to consider planting wheat/ryegrass/clover in October and putting a trailer load of calves (300-500#) on it over the winter. That's a relatively low risk strategy.

Not everyone is looking to make a true 5 to 6 figure incomes on cattle
There are people out there that would like to have a few cattle for various reasons.
To some making a 100$ is better than 0$

If you believe the guys I work with, cattle prices are always bad, and this has just made it worse.

For all the shite the OB and OT give crawfish farmers, cattlemen are even worse when it comes to commodity prices.

Does your property have a water well? If I hand the land I'd have a few head for personal consumption if nothing else.

My brother in law has like 30 head of cattle. I think he mainly has them for the tax breaks that you can qualify for- being able to file for an ag exemption with X amount of cows. I’m not an accountant, but that was my rudimentary knowledge of it. He lives in Texas. Of course they take cows to market every now and then, but I think it’s mainly to reduce the property taxes. He can “save” a grand or two per year with that exemption, plus make a little by selling them

Do it. I’d go registered, maybe something you can sell for a premium? FYI I don’t know shite about cows.
