i just tried to give my wife a quick lesson on retrieving a gun in the event...didnt go so well. Any tips?
I thought maybe she would be more up to learning if I took her to shoot one day

Definitely get her to shoot at least once.
I feel your pain, it took me years to get my wife to finally learn a little about guns, and even then I don't think much took.
She's one of those types who is afraid of guns, but doesn't think they should be restricted.

Talk about a terrible time for your house to get broken into.
Back on topic. Glock 23 in nightstand, all I gotta do is pull the trigger. 12 ga pump under bed loaded with safety on. No children in house.

heck when i guided hunts this was a once a day or more occurance.
Lack of practice, shoulder weapon safety comes off,lower weapon safety goes on, glad I'm not hunting with y'all.
If you can't deal with a safety stick to double action revolvers or glocks.
That way when you drop it or pick it up by the trigger guard you won't shoot an unintended target.

everything in my house is HOT loaded safety on No Kids except my judge its best that it stays in the safe ARs are in the safe & if i need them I am screwed

As much as I love guns and shooting, I can't get the wife interested at all.

I have Door Jam Armor on all my doors after we had a kick-in home invasion. Make sure you get the version that also reinforces the hinges.
Had a 350 lb friend test it out on the back door (a steel door). The sucker is like Fort Knox.

Yes, you should expose them to her in a controlled environment like a shooting range or hunting camp. The only reason they are afraid is because they are unfamiliar with how firearms work and how they can be safe when respected.
Even if you never get your wife into shooting sports (every man's dream, right?
) it's best that she learns how to operate a gun in the event that something bad happens. It would be awful for her to be hurt just because you weren't around, even if she had the means to stop the threat but no knowledge of how to operate it.

Great posts everyone, I really appreciate all of the advice. I'm going to look into some of the reinforcements for doors and windows, had never thought of that before.
Luckily for me, my wife really likes to shoot her new guns. We've only been to the range 3 times, but she has gotten really comfortable handling her gun. She recently passed her CCDW class and has her CCL.
We just need to go to the range regularly, maybe once a month. I've bought four handguns in the last year and probably should consider a shotgun soon and maybe even a hunting rifle in the near future. Any suggestions there, let me know.
I really appreciate the OB for the advice. Overall it sounds like the majority of posters have weapons at the ready in their home, when they are home, just flip off the safety and be ready to fire. That is the kind of information I was wanting, and is my plan.
I do think during the day though, I'm going to lock my weapons up when we aren't home, just in case of a break-in I can keep them from being stolen.
