I keep several guns around for self defense. Most are near their magazines, but a few have the magazines in them with no round chambered. They are all locked up in a safe except one. I keep a shotgun in the closet with a few rounds in the tube but none in the chamber. It's very easy for me to get to in the middle of the night since it's right next to my bed. If I had any kids in the house, I wouldn't do this, but since I don't it's ok.

I'll be honest, I have an empty revolver sitting on my desk, all the ammo is in a dry box on yr floor, and a shotgun and rifle unloaded in their cases with ammo in a dry box or blind bag. Not prepared at all.

Keep a 12-gauge loaded with Home Defense rounds under the edge of my bed I can put my hand on without getting up and a dog that will rip an uninvited guest's arm off if i send her. AINT SKURRED

You know what else you can do? Get a holster and carry everywhere.
I do have holster's for all my guns, but really don't want to carry when I'm in my own home just working away from where my main gun is located. Not a bad idea though.

Realistically, AT LEAST load the revolver and put in in the dry box - it's useless sitting out in the open, unloaded - it is a literal paperweight as it is now. You're not hurting yourself as you have to get to the dry box to load the d*mned thing anyway, and this skips a step. Best practice would be getting a little gunvault that allows you to quickly open it and leave it loaded, on your desk, in the space it occupies now.

I do have dogs that will alert me if they hear something, but mine won't rip anyone's arm off. I'm pretty sure they will run and hide behind me..

357 loaded in nightstand. Train your kids not to touch guns unless given permission. When other kids come over is when I have a problem. It gets unloaded and put up safe when that happens. Other than at night when I'm in bed, it goes back to nightstand.

I have a lab that may draw blood...if she scratches your arm in an attempt to be petted.
Team Glock is curious about all these safety comments.
Loaded pistol/s in bedrooms. I usually have my cc pistol on me even at house.

I have a border collie that will not let anything happen to the horses. Doesn't really care about us. The horses are her family

No horses...but I wouldn't want to be the burglar taking her kibble.

Two dogs that will eat arse that sleep inside at night.

She is a sweet dog and would never hurt anyone unless I send her. But if I get her pumped up, she gets this mohawk thing from the back of her ears all the way down her tail and anything that seems threatening has a yellow ball of mean to go threw

The 3 in my avatar (no longer with me) were cocked and locked at night. Many a coon or rabbit felt their wrath.
One kindly democrat managed to escape with his life during an ice storm due to the fence he jumped. he was trying a B and E. Edit- wasn't going to shoot him in back and do time, but I was ok with him getting mauled.

I live in a crappy one room apartment, and my bed is about 6 steps from the door, so all my guns are sitting on "G" waiting on "O". I have no time for loading, finding mags, trying to find a gun etc etc. I have a gun on all 4 sides of my bed so no matter where I reach I've got my hands on something that goes bang.

So, do you have a family plan for an invasion sequence that you have discussed with your SO? All we have really talked about is if we hear while something while asleep/in bed, the wife heads to the master bathroom where she has her gun. That way if something happens to me, she still has the ability to defend herself.

I try to convince this with every one of my friends that thinks their gun will just jump up and shoot somebody.
It is asinine in my opinion to leave a home defense gun unloaded. There really is no reason to be that unprepared. If something was really happening, fumbling for your gun and ammo with that much adrenaline could be bad news and can be even worse if your family is depending on your security.
I keep my 870 loaded 4+1 under the bed with 00 buck and the safety on.
Also keep my Beretta 96 loaded 13+1 close nearby as well. It's kept condition 2 (loaded chamber, full magazine, hammer down).

I have a youth .410 loaded in the closet, and I got the Nagant pistol for Christmas that I put in a nightstand between me and the .410 in case the shite hits the fan.

Yea, I will never understand when people won't keep a round in the chamber.
For the OP, I keep an 870 loaded, round in the chamber, with 00 Buck, and is laying under my bed.
My 1911 is loaded, round in chamber, hammer back, safety on, and is within arms reach of anywhere I go in my apt.
For the SO house, where she babysits and the fam visits, we have a Gunvault pushbutton safe with a S&W Shield that is loaded, round in chamber, on safe.
Engagements in the home, in a room, often take less than 3 seconds. No reason to spend half of that time making a firearm ready and having a chance for a malfunction.

Those of you that have guns set up for HD, do you have weapon lights?
I have a Glock light on my Glock 22 in the bedroom, and a TLR 3 on a 1911 in my office. I don't have a light on my 870 though.
