What no cream cheese??? I thought it was the bestest friend of all wild game meat.

Brother, we would have all paid high dollar for a little cream cheese and jalapenos to wash the taste out

Yall pick/pluck them yourselves?

Not if I can help it. There's a couple black men around here that will do a fine job, singe em and all for $2 a duck. I only need 10-15 plucked ducks a year so it's not a bad deal. I'm mainly a breast man..

Yep both my mom and dad was born in Pilottown and lived there until Hurricane Camile and I was born down there and spent most of my time down there until Hurricane Katrina.

Do you have a camp down there currently? Stop by and say hello sometime. We are easy to find we are directly across the highway from the new river pilots facility. First house trailer on the left. However we won't be staying there till duck season as we have it rented out through October.

As far as hunting down there we have leased land and we hunt public land. Venice can be a great place to hunt, but it is VERY hard hunting. Meaning there it's not a place for a lazy man to hunt. Lots of work but often times lots of rewards.

Ok, know exactly where you are at. Have some family in the Bar pilots that stay at that station.

We used to have camps in Pilottown but they were demolished in Katrina. My grandparents had a house in pilottown and used to love staying there before Katrina. Used to be right in the middle of both refuges.

I have some family land down there in Southwest pass and pass a loutre and hunt public lands also. Public lands are good but like Da hammer said it is VERY hard hunting. SOmeimes I would push over and pull my pirogues over 200-300 yard sand flats. And when the water goes out during the hunt might have to push twice that far to get back. That along with the long boat rides makes it tough but like he said can be very good if you work for it.

Thanks for the heads up. So,as I hear that one has to deal with sand flates when the north winds blow out the water. Were would one start hunting down there? What about down South pass? Many times running out of SP at day break,I would see alot of birds just north of the lighthouse.Don't know to much about the WMA's. I would like to try a couple blast and cast trips or even a couple overnight fishing/hunting trips.

Pretty much all of south pass except the first mile or so on both sides is part of the pass a loutre wma so yes that would be a good spot to try. Best thing to do is to scout out all of the canals in south pass (try idling in first because some have rocks) and just check it out.

+1 on careful in the cuts off S. Pass.

Lots have rocks almost all have sand bars, some look like cuts but are 6" deep. Baptiste Collette is probably the easiest to hunt as it's very close to the launch and lots of public land once you get past Emmeline pass.

Not many places you can kill greenheads and canvasbacks in the same spot. Great pictures!

Pond in front our house, we put boxes up in the woods and on some telephone poles and when they hatched they all came to the pond

ETA: the mallards are "domestic" but the Woodducks are as wild as they come

Anything special for your woodduck boxes? How high did you put them on the trees/poles?
