I don't know many of the areas listed, but there is PLENTY of outdoor hunting and fishing options around Shreveport. Look at the lakes within 30 minutes...Bistineau, Caddo, Cross, Wallace, Red River...and I'm sure there are other small ones I'm leaving out. Idk about public deer hunting, but I know there are plenty of inexpensive leases to get in. I live in Lafayette and get in one every year in Oil City just because it's only $300.

Birmingham has surprisingly good outdoor activities within a short drive.

Oh, OK. While not quite the cosmopolitan paradise that is Shreveport, Birmingham is pretty solid.

Good point. No ducks around DC, Houston or up in MN? And is Little Rock that good for duck hunting if EVERYONE there duck hunts?

Minnesota is huge into goose hunting.

I lived in little rock area for a year and found plenty of places to hunt while I was there.

Dc is on the Atlantic flyway which sucks.

Dallas: It depends on what you like to do. Good fishing places close by, but not much in the way of deer hunting.

How hard is the cold adjustment? I know you're a NWLA boy living in AK, and seeing as how I'm a BR native now in Shreveport - how much of an adjustment is it for the cold in a place like MN?

Great deer hunting among other species, fishing is going to be the ohio river and a few lakes. The city and burbs kind of suck though

Rochester has a climate similar to Anchorage but the winters aren't as long and the summers a bit warmer. A few weeks and you're acclimated. If you get cold, you need to get better outdoor gear. Lots of fun stuff to do outdoors in winter including sledding/skiing, ice fishing, hunting, snowmachining, etc.

Quality of life in Rochester is extremely high, it's usually at the top or near the top of best places to live in the category it's in. Not very far away from Minneapolis.

I'll see your Toledo and raise you a Guntersville and a Lay Lake.

Well, I went from Louisiana to DC, so rather than rank the rest of them, let me give you the run down on outdoor activities up here.

There is a hell of a lot to do, but as others have said, it depends on what you're into. I will say that this part of the world deals with less "volume" than Louisiana. For example, these dudes spend as much, if not more, as we do in Louisiana to waterfowl hunt, and its only to kill two Canada Geese per person. For a 4 man duck hunt, 8 or 9 birds is one hell of a day...and you probably cant eat half of the seaducks. Contrast this with a 20-24 duck day in Louisiana.

Massive deer in the area, but the areas that do allow rifle hunting allow it for what feels like 45 minutes. It may be 3 or 4 days long. Lots of bow hunting, but no hunting at all on Sunday (in Maryland anyway). That said, MASSIVE deer. MD's deer herd is super underrated.

WRT fishing, its huge in the Chesapeake Bay...big old Stripers. Lots of fun! But you're only bringing home two of those as well, rather than 25 or 50 specks. As far as fly fishing, there are good opportunities in almost every direction for Trout.

As far as just camping opportunities, the Shenandoah National Park is about 90 minutes from DC and is badass. Beautiful area, and you can spend every weekend out there without hitting up the same area twice. You can do multiday canoe trips, float (think Bogue Chitto, but prettier), and fish on a few rivers out there. Good smallmouth.

That said, I do most of my serious recreatin' elsewhere. I still have my duck lease in Arkansas, and still do my saltwater fishing primarily out of Venice. Growing up in Louisiana, I'm not sure that I will ever see any place as all together comparable, but different strokes for different folks.

...and PS- I live in the District and have several guns here. Its not an issue.

Very true. Wind is the only thing I dislike in winter, and haven't found the proper stuff to protect me in extremely windy conditions. Cold isn't a problem, they make stuff you can buy off the rack that will keep you warm down to 45 below.

My wife is from Arkansas and hated the cold down there, but enjoys winter here. There are folks who just can't deal with cold weather who will never acclimate though. My dad is like that.

I live 20 miles south of Memphis in Miss. Tunica is a stones throw away and has lots of deer, ducks and turkey. There is a good bit of public land here tied up by the Corps of Engineers lakes. Arkabutla, Sardis and Enid lakes have some great white perch fishing. After 15 years here, I still refuse to call them crappie.
Pick Wick lake is close as well.
Oxford and Starkville are close so LSU road games are pretty easy. Knoxville is a bit of a drive, but not terrible.
Little Rock wouldn't be bad either, but I haven't spent much time over there.
