Polaris Ranger

WTB a used Polaris ranger. How many hrs are too many hrs in these units? Been searching FB marketplace for a few days now. Noticed a number of post say that the motors have been replaced. I’m not too familiar with the Northstar Engines and how long they typically last, if maintained correctly.

Rangers are trash. You will easily spend as much as you paid for the bike on repairs.

I have 6000 miles and 1100 hrs on the original engine of my 2012. If maintained , the engines are rock solid. Weak links are the plastic spragues in the front differential, flimsy wiring, and suspension bushings.
All brands have their quirks , just try and find one that's well maintained and clean . Personally I'd shoot for under 500 hours on the engine if possible.

I only have one downvote to give
I have a ‘12 midsize and it’s been rock solid since I bought it new.

I have a Northstar. 2019. Service expenses only with no breakdowns yet.

You’re lucky. I had a 2019. It left me in the woods twice when the Brake pressure switch went out. Numerous electrical issues. After dumping almost 2K in it I sold it. My 2015 was bullet proof. I’ll never buy another Polaris.

Completely agree, all brands have their weak links. Found a few on the marketplace, trying to stay away from the “snorkeled” ones.

In what world can you take my own personal experience, where I spent as much as the bike cost on repairs, and simply call it horseshite? That is what happened. It is still sitting in the weeds right now because I don’t know what to do with a bike that needs its third new engine.

I'm leary of a lot of ATV/UTV vehicles used, not to say I wouldn't buy one used just be careful.
So many people are very hard on them, tear something up and flip them to buy something else.
I have a 2012 900 crew and it is still on it's original motor, I have had to change some wear and tear stuff on it but it's not been bad. I also hunt along the Big black river which floods a lot so it has to handle a lot of mud and ruts and its still going strong.
Try and find one that is used around a farm/retired household and I think you will be very happy.

Because it is horseshite to definitively say he’ll pay more on repairs than he paid for the bike on any ranger based on your single anecdotal experience. Maybe you got a lemon but out of the 8 that I’ve been around or owned none have required much more than routine maintenance and have held up to being beat to shite in gumbo mud. They’ve been right there with two pioneers on reliability.

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything but was hoping for some advice
We are looking into buying a side by side for the family, and this is a new market for me. I’m just getting started into looking at different brands and models, but have no clue what I’m looking at. I see Kawasaki Teryxs all over Facebook, and they seem to be what I’m looking for, what are y’all’s opinions on these machines? I don’t need a racing SXS, and I don’t want strictly a ‘working’ SXS, so these seem to be in the middle.
So if you were me, what would yall be looking for? I need seating for 4, don’t care about top speed, don’t have any desire to sink it in 6ft of mud/water, etc… point me in the right direction. Willing to buy used, but don’t have an issue buying new

What you’re describing doesn’t usually mean a sport model like a teryx, and I’d be wearing of buying a performance machine like that used. In the south they are bought to sink. The “utility” machines in the 1000cc range with CVTs will accelerate and go faster than I care to drive on a sketchy arse logging road. Prices aren’t usually all that far apart until you get into upgraded suspensions, so it just gets into what you want to do with it. Utility machines will haul some stuff and go plenty fast, sport machines won’t haul much and will go faster than you’ll ever actually want to go. Suspension is overlooked and something that goes a long way towards making riding more enjoyable, even if you aren’t going to dog it, and you really need to drive one to feel the difference.
We have a 4-seater Ranger non-XP 1000 and it’s been great, Honda makes a 4-seater pioneer where the seats fold down in the back to make a bed which is a nice feature, but I’m not a big fan of the suspension or transmission. Can’t go wrong with any of the Japanese bikes really they can just be harder to find, especially used and not clapped out.

I saw the Hondas and just think they’re absolutely hideous. Just my opinion though. I’m not looking to go 80mph but don’t want to be stuck doing 35 either
How much did you spend on yours if you don’t mind me asking?

Right at 18 with a roof and windshield for the premium trim, but that’s been about a year. You could tell me they’ve gone up or down since then and I’d believe you. It supposedly has a limiter set to 54mph but I’ll never find out, and it will pin you to the seat if you stomp on it. Debated getting the XP for more advertised HP but glad I didn’t get upsold.

Kawasaki Mule is what I would get. Get a good used 800 4 seater and call it a day. Great farm and hunting vehicle but can have recreational fun in it as well.

Hours are less important than average speed. The higher the average speed the better.
I had a 900 with a little over 15000 miles on it. Ran great. Still runs great for the guy who bought it.
Always did polaris fluids in the diff/trans and mobil 1 0w40 in the engine.
Bushings would go out about every 3000 miles. Until I added proper grease fittings. Then zero failures.
Currently looking at the northstar crew with AC and what not.
I don't really need it, but Im tired of mosquitos.
Only thing that ever failed was the gear selector. More my wife's fault than anything. $40 later and it was good to go.

I would propose sitting in it and practicing not fricking up.

If you kill the engine multiple times, in any machine produced in north america or japan, the problem is you, not the machine.

If you truly don't care about performance. Pioneer 700. It's slow, it's boring, but as long as you don't put put around all the time, it's very reliable.
If you need a full bed and can handle a full crew unit, the mule profx is the infinitely better choice. More reliable. Less boring. More comfortable.
If you can tolerate a smaller bed, general 4 seater or teryx.
If you can tolerate a REALLY small bed, the rzr 1000 4 seater is very reliable if you arent always in the mud.
If you need a big bed, comfortable, and want decent performance, ranger xp six seater.
If you want a stupidly good deal... Rmax 4 seater. Great sxs that no one buys.
I'd go mule profx or ranger. I've had all of them except a teryx.
