I recently got a 16' Lakesport center console with a 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke. Good little boat! I've grown up operating boats, fishing and being on the water...but this is my first time "in charge". I also overthink things...so here I am ha!

I live in Lafayette and want to take the boat out somewhere easy to fish for redfish. Pointe Aux Chene is where I'm leaning. Shorter runs to spots and possibly more traffic should the Lakesport act up - this would be my first "real" trip in the boat after having it serviced and tinkering with it in the Vermillion by the airport.

I posted a while back on where I could take the boat for reds and Delacroix was the overwhelming favorite, but that is a 3+ hour drive. Pointe Aux Chene is closer and I was thinking that PAC Marina was a good spot to launch.

I hear there are motor restrictions out that way. Where can I look up where that applies and what the restrictions are?

Should I run west or east of PAC Marina?

Any places where I can get reports like fishing and/or current trouble spots (like potential spots to run aground)?

Any advice is appreciated!

If you launch out of the marina at the end of the road, you don't have to worry about any motor restrictions.

If you go left out of the marina you'll head towards Bully Camp/Sulphur Mine area. If you go right, you'll head towards Lake Chien. Both areas have ample marsh with redfish.

The only motor restriction is if you are on the WMA in the Marsh.

PAC has been off this year. Not sure what the problem is. I would hit Grand Bayou and go south, fish the marsh to the North Lake Chien. Also Lake Chien shorelines are good for reds too, just have to watch the weather in that boat.

You could also launch at Basons in Larose, you wont lose an axle driving through thier parking lot like you will at the PAC marina.

Another option that would be closer for you is the Ashland Boat Launch in Houma. You would run Bayou Chauvin down and there's some nice marsh off of that thats holds redfish.

I have this same boat with a 60 four stroke. No recommendations on fishing pac. But I do take mine to cocodrie and Cypremort quite a bit.

Why not drive 90 min west?
I walked a buddy through our area during thanksgiving and he finished with his reds and 3 flounder. Ain’t no way I would drag a boat down 90 for 4 reds. Silverhookfishing65@yahoo.com if you want some help over in big lake.

You can catch reds and trout out of cypremort point right now without having to run far at all. I’d start there.

As mentioned, Ashland boat launch is much shorter than PAC, and there are a ton of reds around the marsh over there. Lots of duck hunting right now though so don’t go venturing off onto somebody’s lease.

Another option is Boudreaux canal boat launch on the way to cocodrie. There’s fish in Boudreaux canal, Lake Boudreaux, and surrounding marsh.

I’ve never fished PAC but you’re passing up a lot of fish to try and go catch them over there.

Surely there has to be a place closer to Lafayette to catch redfish

If you have advice I'll take it. But all I have is a 40hp with a shallow v center console and not a terribly big gas tank. Long runs aren't ideal and I can't outrun weather. I'm not comfortable running across the Vermillion Bay, Terrebonne Bay or something similar. Short runs to brackish and/or saltwater is what I'm after. Everyone I know here in Lafayette all gave me the "ehhhhh...you sure?" when I mention the point.

I liked the idea of PAC simply bc it's where kayakers go for reds. So, common sense told me that there are inherently shorter runs there.

I've fished my whole life...in 20+ footers that belong to someone else (the perfect boats!!!). I want to get to know this boat a bit before I am confident on the longer runs for a 40hp 16 footers.

I'm all ears!

The wind could be blowing 15-20 and you'll be fine out of Ashland, unless you run all the way down to Lake Boudreaux and try to cross it.

Another option is T-Irvs in Dulac. The guy that runs the launch is very knowledgeable and shares information freely. We always chat with him before to get a report and when we get back we give him a report. its mostly protected too. Good thing about there is after you catch your 4 reds you can fish at 1 of 2 floodgates and pick up a few sheep head.

Ashland only has a launch and no bait, ice or fuel.

I am going to try your suggestion and let you know.
You need launch and fish spots not launch and run to spots.

Is the Ashland Boat Launch the public launch by the Ashland Landfill?

Big lake is a little over an hour from Lafayette. Cypermont point is too hit or miss.
PAC is a drive to go just for one day.
We used to have a camp in larose. The red fishing has always been good in PAC.

Yes, some people call it the Jail Launch, or the dump launch, if I'm telling an outsider the name I go with Ashland Launch, that's what pops up on Google Maps.
