Bought one on the side of the road over the weekend. Nice sized bush already- ~4ft tall and 3-4ft wide. Maybe 75-100 small blueberries coming out. My mom said in order for it to keep coming back each year, I'll need another one right by it. Any truth to that?

I don't t know much about blueberries, but my BIL has a part time/ hobby growing operation north of Covington. Talking to him, he claims that it isvery difficult to get blueberries to grow on the southshore of Lake Pontchartrain. He says that blackberries would grow ok on the southshore, but not blueberries. He said it has to do with the acidity of the soil.

To the best of my knowledge, you need 2 different varieties to cross-pollinate.

This is the case. The most important thing about growing blueberries.

A few other notes -

As mentioned, they like "dry feet." Plant on a hill or a high spot that won't hold water.

When planting that blueberry bush, go buy some root stimulator and follow the directions. It'll really get the plant off on the right foot and set you up for the future quite well.

If you have blueberries on the bush, check it daily because the birds will tear them up in the afternoon.

Good luck

Picked one up for $15 on the side of Highway 25 in between Folsom and Franklinton. I think the bush is already full grown bc I can't imagine blueberry bushes getting larger than this
