I'm looking at a glock 43(9mm) or a glock 23(.40cal).

It'll serve as home protection and maybe some carrying around. It'll be my only piece for at least a year.

I've shot with my friends glock 19 and 23 plenty, but its been awhile now.

What do have?

You'll get a much better response and discussion on the outdoor board, just fyi.

I want a Colt single action army and a custom and leather ammo belt and hip holster so I can open carry like a cowboy.

I'd love to draw on a thug

If you're going to carry it regularly get a 43. If not, get the 23. The 23 can be very unfun to carry throughout much of the year.

These aren't really comparable platforms. These are for different purposes. A G43 is, essentially a single stack G26 - the "baby" Glock in 9mm. Although there is no single stack equivalent in .40, the closest platform in that caliber would be the G27 - the double stack "baby" Glock in .40 S&W.

I am not recoil sensitive and I like both the Glock 23 and Sig P229 in .40 - those are a step down in size from 17s and 22s, which are the full size Glock service pistols in 9mm and .40, respectively.

Obviously, you're familiar with 19s and 23s - so, I would pick one of those, and if you decide to carry it concealed, get a good hybrid IWB holster and conceal under an untucked shirt or light jacket.

Unless you're going to be deep concealing on a regular basis, or are somehow in love with the baby Glocks, I would stay away from G26, G27, G43 and similar small guns. They're not fun to shoot (and you need to shoot a home defense gun) and not ideal for anything except to bring a full sized pistol cartridge in a fairly compact package.

I would say 43. Lighter and slimmer. Can conceal it better during the summer months if you plan on carrying.

Also with modern ammo there really isn't much of a difference between 9, .40, and .45

A) Don't buy a Glock.

B) Buy a 9, not a .40. Post this or ask for it to be moved to the Outdoor Board. Those guy's can explain it all better than I can. But basically, most 9s holds more rounds, 9mm is a more accurate round, and with modern round technology the 9mm has just as much stopping power as the .40 does. Plus, it is a lot cheaper to buy ammo for, which means more plinking for you on the range. The FBI is actually switching back to 9mm as the Agency's standard firearm after extensive testing. The .40 is essentially obsolete thanks to modern rounds.

EDIT: Would also advise the H&K VP9. It and the Walther are 2 gorgeous pieces imo. They are both full size though, both are 15+1. The Shield has an extended mag that will make it 8+1, but its standard is 7+1. It is designed to be a carry gun, but it isn't tiny, it is more of a medium sized gun..

C) Buy a Walther PPQ 9mm. If some carrying means 2 or 3 days a week, get a S&W M&P Shield 9mm. Great gun, and easy to carry. If some carrying means twice a month, get the PPQ. FTR, there are several guns I would buy before a Glock. I personally carry the Shield, and love it.

D) Profit

I have the 22, 23, and the 27. The 23 is my favorite all around handgun, but it is still a little large for concealed carry. It has already been said that the 27 is not a very good platform, and I agree, I plan to get rid of mine and get a 43 for concealed carry.

Eh wouldn't say this. The best advice for someone getting a new gun is always go to a gun shop where they can test fire a variety of handguns and decide what feels best for them.

Well yes, I just think you can get better guns for the money. Plus Glocks normally aren't usually a new shooter's favorite weapon. Ergonomically they are uncomfortable, built kinda like a brick. The PPQ and VP9 I mentioned are incredibly comfortable. I love the way they sit in my palm. The Shield is decent in that respect as well, not great, but decent. It's trigger is nowhere close to the triggers on the first two though.

OP, I agree with what he said for the most part. Go to a shop that has a range, and shoot guns from at least 5 different manufacturers. H&K, Sig Sauer, Walther, S&W, Springfield...etc.

I don't think the G43 is going to be much better. For a real "deep conceal" - I don't think it gets any better than the little Kahrs - the trigger pull is a little long, but man - it just goes away in the pocket.

The 43 is a little better than the 26, but not worth trading it - a brick is a brick. Glocks are great for what they are - idiot proof guns that need almost no maintenance. They are the "basic" hammer of the handgun world. I have 1 (a 23) and I like it. I like my Sigs better.

But, Kahr or the Kel-tecs (depending on preference) - heck, all those companies make are conceal carry guns - and they do it well at a reasonable price.

The utility of the G26 (or 27) is that, in a pinch, you can use the larger magazines as spares and only stock 1 kind of spare magazine (either the 17 or 22) - but, unless I'm mistaken, you won't have that option with the 43.

On the other hand, recoil will be a little more tamed going with 9mm - but still - too much sugar for a dime, IMHO.

I bought the Glocks for the reasons you stated, they just work, and the ability to interchange mags. I am not a firearm collector, or shooting enthusiast, they are just tools for a specific job. I went with the 27 because I was comfortable with Glocks, and was leaning torwards the 43 for the same reason, but I will take a hard look at Kahr, as I really don't want to make the same mistake again.

I've shot with my brother's Ruger 9mm and Beretta 9mm a lot, but it's been years too. Also a cousin's Glock 37, that thing is a monster.

Didn't care for the Ruger. The Beretta shot super smooth and felt great in my hands.

I think I will certainly go 9mm.

What do have?

1. What other people have should be immaterial.

2. Ace Midnight has given you some excellent advice.

3. VaBamaMan sorta had good advice, except for the part about "Don't buy a Glock." There's no gun more reliable than a Glock, and reliability is the #1 criterion to consider.

4. The G43 is pretty hard to control.

5. You can easily conceal a G23 or G19 IF you make some accommodations (good belt, good holster and shirts that aren't "skin tight.") I carry a G19 every day, all day long, unless I'm going into a place where guns are prohibited.

6. Today's GOOD 9mm ammo (Federal HST, Winchester Ranger-T and Corbon DPX) will make sizable holes in an assailant -- which is all any handgun will do in common carry calibers. The HST that I've tested expands to .83 caliber, and the G19 carries 18 rounds if you add the "+2" base plate to the magazine. That's a lot of firepower in a relatively small handgun.

7. Glock sells more G19's than any other model. It's the most popular, for a good reason - it's the most reliable CCW weapon made.

8. Quit looking gun advice on the internet. How are you supposed to differentiate between/among all the conflicting opinions ??

The foregoing is just my $.02 worth.
