Is there a reason for this? Does it make it easier to hold or make it kick less?

It helps when shooting from the hip and when tacticool matters.

I wouldn't say it makes the shotgun kick less, but it most definitely makes it kick arse.

I'm not a big fan of them, but I can see their pros and cons. For me personally, the angle of the grip makes me shoot lower. For some people that could be a positive thing in a home defense situation, as it kind of forces you to aim at center mass. The big downside for me is that it makes the weapon a lot harder to handle with one hand. With a standard stock, I can release either hand to open a door and still feel like I'm in control of the gun, but with a pistol grip it just nosedives if I take my hand off of the foregrip. Those things, combined with my opinion of you should leave any home defense weapon as stock as possible makes me say no thanks.

You need to specify whether you are talking about a pistol grip with or without a stock.

I would never shoot a shotgun without a stock since it'll about break your wrist if the load you're using is strong enough.

With a stock and a pistol grip, it's pretty much personal preference. I'd rather a pistol grip since I'm used to the grips of the AR platform. Plus the angle is more gradual with a pistol grip and is easier on my wrist.

It's personal preference but I wouldn't say it has a huge effect on felt recoil.

One thing to factor in is your experience with shotguns that have a conventional stock.

Most people who hunt, or shoot skeet/trap/sporting clays, have developed some "muscle memory (neural pathways, whatever) that lets them mount the gun and quickly point the barrel at a target. The operative word is "quickly."

For those who don't have this background, or who have a stronger background with "EBR's", the pistol grip stock may work just as well as (or maybe better than) a conventional stock.

The PGO (pistol grip only) stock has little to offer.

I received a pistol grip .12ga "SWAT" style shotgun for my birthday. Matte Black

It's pretty fun to shoot and faster to reload but I prefer the more traditional grip

I have a Winchester Defender 18inch barrel with a pistol grip. Only shot it once and it kicks like a mule. Would not even entertain shooting it with one hand. Badass gun though. Shoots either 5 3" shells or 8 2 and 3/4 shells.
