Since the old thread is locked and the pics are long gone, let's do this again. I may have the old stumpfoot photo somewhere. What is this?

We caught plenty of mature bluegill, and none looked like this, and the body on this one was WAY thicker.

Goggle Eye aka Warmouth https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/fish/warmouth

Colors do vary quite a bit.

Nope. Caught plenty of those in the same area. Very different.

Definitely a hybrid of some sort. Either way, a good eater for sure.

goggle-eye = warmouth.

Not as good eating as bluegill, imo.

Maybe a shellcracker, AKA redear? I'm really just guessing on these, I call them all bream except for the goggle eye, which generally have a proportionally much larger mouth.

I don't think they always have the red band that gives them the name redear.

In any event, wish I was actually fishing instead of looking up fish online.

Right, but that's not what this is.

Its a hybrid of bluegill/goggle eye. Caught plenty the other day. Goggle eye body with blue gill mouth. Usually a lot oranger belly than regular goggle eye

Not sure exactly what its proper name would be, but I put it in the same grease as the rest of the bream.

Whatever it is, those fins look like its been hangin' out at Sonic!

Gotta be a hybrid of some sort. Looks like a mix between red ear and bluegill

I now believe this is the winner.

Here's that combo as claimed by La. Sportsman,

Certainly possible it's a hybrid but it looks like a warmouth to me. Sunfish vary so much individually and between spawning phases it's hard to make hard and fast rules on what's what. Throw in that goggle-eye gets used to describe three different species and it gets confusing fast.

Warmouth:

It's definitely not a goggle eye.

I don't think so. Look at the coloration on the second warmouth I posted, which is a spawning male. If it's a hybrid I think it's a bluegill-warmouth. Also red ear and bluegill have different spawning habits, leading to natural hybrids being more rare. Much more likely a bluegill and a warmouth would cross paths as both spawn more often and at the same depth (generally).

Nothing about it says warmouth.

I don't know what you're calling a goggle-eye, but that fish absolutely has some warmouth in it. I'm not seeing any red ear features. The mouth is definitely blue-gill and the coloration is 100% male warmouth in spawning phase.
