Anyone know somewhere local to buy marine grade paint and primer in a tan-ish color? Was thinking about ordering some “Parker duck boat” paint and primer from Cabela’s but it takes a while to ship and I’m itching to paint this bad boy. Also, do y’all think 1 gallon of paint and 1 gallon of primer is enough for a 1442?
Thanks

Where do you live?
Go to West Marine.
If that's not an option then order from Amazon

Duralux aluminum marine paint. This is what we paint our hunting boats with and they take a beating. I get it from the local building supply store, but from a quick search it looks like Home Depot carries it. Sand it, spray it with aluminum bright, rinse it, and paint.

I've been needing to repaint a 15 footer my FIL gave me a year or so back. Does it need to be sanded down to bare metal or just sand it to give it a prepped surface for the new paint to adhere to? Thanks!

What boat motor bandit is talking about. It is called kem 400. You could probably buy some from gatortrax in Holden if you like their colors, that is what they use and I think they’ll sell it.

you can literally roll duralux over your existing paint... no need for sanding or alumabrite

Is duralux just an industrial enamel paint? Friend of mine said any industrial enamel paint is “marine” paint

It doesn’t have to be sanded down to bare metal if you are going to prime it. I scuff it up good, make sure that their isn’t anything peeling or flaking or loose anywhere, clean it really good with a degreaser, wipe it down and dry it completely, let it sit out in the sun and warm up a bit, prime it, and paint. I’m not an expert but I’ve done this a few times. If you get the kem 400 primer make sure you get the catalyst for it as well.

ETA: I’ve only used kem400 and an hvlp to repaint aluminum boats. I don’t know about the other products.

yes. I used to sell it. its got vinyl or something on it, I forget. the other paints are enamels, white, unit rig grey, signal red, etc.
the aluminum boat paint literally says eliminates the need for priming. its best to go on bare aluminum but you really don't need to. it goes right over whatever other color your boat is. I think Sonoma and a few others have seen my boat and all I do is paint right over it.

I ended up buying a gallon of duralux dead grass green. I’m gonna scuff it up (it’s already bare aluminum, never been painted), clean with vinegar, rinse, and paint.
Thanks y’all

I've only had to touch up some areas on my aluminum boat, but I just use the self etching primer by rustoleum. Seems to work fine. My cousin painted his entire boat with it and its looks fine.

This is what I did with a 14ft aluminum boat. It's an ugly old boat, but that can primer has lasted a lot better than I expected.
