I have an 08 Silverado with a 5.3L 4x4 and the engine is going out. Can I replace it with say an 04 or 05 5.3L or 6.0L instead of putting another newer engine in it? the newer engines are crap. Im just wondering if anyone knows if it would fit.

What in the hell did you do to a 5 year old engine for it to die?

pieces of shite. Only has 85,000 miles. That's why I don't want to pay 2K for a used newer model engine because its going to do the same thing. my dad has 04 or 05 5.3L sitting around. Id rather put an old one because they last longer than the shite they are coming out with now.

As far as I know, the 5.3 in the 900 platform (what you have) is the same as in the earlier versions.

You may regret the 6.0L with the stock 4L60E trans. Find a 6.0L with a trans (4l80E) and transfer case and I think you'll just need a new drivshaft, ECU flash, and some small harness mods.

If I was you, I'd junkyard a 5.3 and go right back in with it- I had a 2004 K1500 with 165,000 when I sold it and the guy is still driving it today 4 years later....same motor.

You should be able to put an older model engine in it and reflash the computer, but I might be wrong.

Check the truck sites.

Yeah this is what im trying to figure out for sure before I pull the trigger and put it in. Im sure We could get the motor in and make it run, but will it ever be "right" if that makes any sense..

You could put a carb motor in it if you wanted to bad enough.

Check sites like fullsizechevy.com and others. There's TONS of information and project threads on those sites and chances are somebody already did what you're talking about and made a thread on it.

You have to have a certain number of posts I think.

I would search alot before starting a thread anyway. There's probably one already on there somewhere with plenty info.

I'm using a thread off there as a parts list for an auto to manual swap in my camp truck

He's determined though.

OP, go back with the 5.3. Yours probably had issues b/c of the wreck/flood/theft.
Nothing wrong with an 08 5.3, generally.

On a side note, I'm looking at getting a 2013 silverado 4x4 with the 8 cylinder engine and 6 speed automatic transmission

This a good truck/ engine? Anyone have any experience with it

Don't care. Like vette said, I am beyond determined.

NV4500 (which I may attempt to rebuild myself) and 4.56 or 4.88 gears coming up

I sorta toyed with the idea of redoing a late 80's or early 90's half ton.
350 5spd 6" lift 35's
Tons of those trucks around, probably for good deals
Problem is I really need the extended cab doors though with lil upgrade.

Mine is pretty much set in stone. I've been putting a list together for over a year and I'm pretty sure I have most everything covered.

Dying to start on it, but I'm still torn on buying a donor truck or piecing the whole thing together.
