When are the expected dates for the fly over to take place? I just can't see where we would have many ducks yet with the lack of cool fronts lately..

My crystal ball tells me that the flyover will confirm that Catahoula is loaded and everyone and their brother will swarm there like last year.

Maybe, but I saw somebody posting the other day about how the rain had the lake up to almost 32' and that any more would have a diver fest for a good while. Guess honey brake will be in heaven with all the jacks.

The survey may be a little late due to Mr. Reynolds conducting the survey from the back of a whooping crane, funds getting tight these days

Was there the other day and their wasn't much flying around. And yes the water is up so it will be tough hunting. Hardly any feed and high water is not good at all.

Not many in NE TX right now. Found enough grays to hunt, but not going to hunt them on the opener. Got to manage the top water boom scouters as much as the ducks.

I got guys saying that it's got more feed than ever and covered up. But they aren't hunting it, just repeating what their buddies hunting the lake are telling them. You hunting Pomme or red river instead?

I don't think there's enough ducks to count the first week in November to justify putting fuel in the plane. Just hope the commissioners in the marsh get their grey ducks this weekend.

no one go to Catahula lake!! No ducks no feed! Please go elsewhere. But for real it has more gass on it than last year so we shall see.. It stayed under water longer and looked meek, but it dried very fast and grew some good grass..

Yeah I hunted the nebo side for years. When it was 3 ducks it was awesome, when the limits went up it became a shot show.

I'm confused by all the references as to the early opener benefitting the marsh and the NOLA area. I hunt the NOLA area, and I can promise you we wanted the later opener just as bad if not worse than everyone in SWLA and elsewhere. Nov. 7 is bullshite. All we can hope for is that the rezone for next year will make things right.

Why they changed it from last year is beyond me.

It's always season starts too early, needs to stay open until Feb when the birds "finally show up". They are here, just offshore waiting for the surface drives to get put in garage. By the time Jan gets here I'm ready to watch them fall thru the limbs and don't want to fight no water and all the other problems hunting on coast.

All said feed is under 5 foot of water right now. With more rain coming. Sad I will probably have to hunt the floater for opening day.

My issue with the early opener has nothing to do with the closing date or birds finally showing up. It's just that - the opening date. Some years, the birds make it down early enough. Other years, they don't. The extra week makes a big difference to me. Last year was perfect, even though the last couple weeks in January were a total pain in the arse.

The water in January sucks any way you look at it, but it's just like you said - the birds are there the whole time. The smart hunters are going to kill the ducks. I just find that the ducks are often actually not physically present during the first week of November, which is frustrating.

I'm not really sure if I'm making much sense. It's been a long day and my brain is pretty fried.

Bluemoons I share your very same perspective and you are making perfect sense. I have the early opener and have written, spoken and attended meetings to discuss. The problem is the current wildlife commission wants the season to open early. Somehow being near New Orleans we are blamed for that but I can tell you that is NOT the case based on WLF opinion surveys. It seems the SW part of the state is most behind it.

It really doesn't matter who wants it the fact is it's here. Occasionally we will have enough ducks to shoot this early, but most years we are going to have mainly teal and spoonies and will hopefully kill limits. I would love to have the extra week.

I'm in the plane now headed for line 20 in upper Terrebonne.

Flew the first 19 lines over the last 2 days with late starts due to weather. I won't know totals until I crunch the numbers, but we found good concentrations of ducks in the Ag north of Intracoastal City and between Lacassine NWR and Welsh, and a really good bunch in the marsh SE of Lake Calcasieu. Mostly gadwalls and bluewings. My gut feeling is its neither great nor dismal, but ?????

We'll see how what SE looks like today.
