I built them and installed them myself because a local company quoted something like $1800 to do about half of what we wanted to do. They are 5' panels. Used a knock off sunbrella type fabric, 3/4 inch EMT and a 12 volt 15 RPM gear motor. We have 2 sets of 2 on one side and 1 set of 3 on another side. I built a remote control speed controller for them and they work like a charm. The only issue is I have rare earth magnets set at fixed distances to keep them from blowing in the wind which means you have to attach and detach them when you roll them down or up and they have to be at those heights instead of being variable height . I have come up with several ways to keep them in a track where they could stop anywhere along their travel but I haven't done any of that. I started off using a drill motor and a bit extension to run them up and down but that got old. All in I have less than $600 in them not counting my time. a good bit of that is trimming them out to hide them when they are rolled up. There is a bunch of youtube videos on it....thats how I came up with it. Ours work good. They aren't like the full aluminum ones but they do the same thing and look good.

I was quoted something like 18k, I didn't even reply back to them. I have some large openings to cover like 12x12 or so but still. I was going to look at a DIY approach, thanks for the intel. Link to the fabric you used if you still have it handy.

Don't cover it.
Just leave it on.
It'll last years.

I bought a 42" Toshiba off FB marketplace for $50. It's been on my patio for 4 years now. It's under a roof but it gets wet every time it rains. Still works.

This is pretty close to the same stuff. This is 5'10" wide and I think what I used was only 5" wide. I hemmed it by cutting strips and doubling them over and sewed them with a walking foot sewing machine my wife uses to quilt and sew vinyl with. That step probably wasn't necessary as it made the roll much thicker than it would have been without it. It took the material about a week or so in the sun and heat to get all of the creases and winkles out - they wouldn't roll up like I wanted them to originally but after they had been exposed to the sun for a while they roll up nicely.

I had a $500 indoor TV (I think Sony) that covered with a canvas cover. I had it for 4 years and then sold my house with it still working. Never had an issue, but I always covered it and it was under a covered patio out of the rain and direct sun.

yeah I've cycled through a couple of cheap TV's for mine. Its under the roof and stays uncovered. Get a cheap SMART TV and you'll be fine. Buy a new one every 5 years or so.
My neighbor bought the $5k expensive "outdoor tv" and bought the black plastic enclosure for it.
I have seen alot of people use these though for regular tvs.

I'm on my second old TV from inside being used as my covered deck TV. Bought a 50 inch to hang on the living room wall and moved a decade old 46 inch out there, back in 2020. It lasted until last fall. The screen was still fine, but no sound was working. I tried different inputs, from a Firestick, to a DVD player, to an XBox, on all of the available HDMI inputs. Even plugged an old Nintendo Wii into it with the old RGB cables, an a Coax antenna, and couldn't get sound to work with anything. So I tossed it and put an even older 32 inch I had stored in the basement out there. Still works great. When that one dies, I've got a somewhat newer 32 inch in my home office I'll stick there and upgrade the office TV. The only thing mine is exposed to is cold and heat. It sits on a table right next to the house, in a corner, and the edge of the deck is 12 feet away, so it never gets any direct moisture. Sure we have some humidity to deal with, but at $200-300 for a new TV, I'll just keep upgrading another TV and put that old one out on the deck.

I made one out of an overhead projector years ago and it worked great at night....did not work at all in daylight. Yours work in daylight?
We used that overhead projector TV for movie night on base in Germany....it was great. Used a sheet for a screen, put out a notice that we were setting it up and have a block party....it was blast. Also watched a lot of sports on it in the same manner.

I need one of these for the tractor. I could watch videos while I'm bushhogging.

I use mine mostly out on our lanai. I didnt want to hang a TV up out there. Just got tired of installing them in the new house.
I use it right on the side of the wall. It looks great at night. Even with the rough finished walls in Florida. Works during the day as well. If I were going to use it a lot outside during the day, I will get a cheap screen and just hang it when I needed it.
I like it because we have Xfinity to go and I just take it with us and use it where ever we go.
The sound is not great but you can add a bluetooth speaker. The good thing about the sound though is that it comes out of the projector so you dont have to turn it up so lout outside. At night, I just put it on the deck and shoot it up on the side of the house.
I never tried the first gen version of the Samsung but this one works great. I have had a couple goofy connectivity issues but they usually work themselves out in a few mins...

Yep. Cheap tv from Walmart. Cover over it and UNPLUG IT WHEN NOT IN USE. Will last 3-5 years maybe more.

This is an old tv from our old house. Has been on this porch for 5 years now. Middle Georgia humidity has not killed it yet. But I do keep it unplugged when it in use. I bought a cheap 54” last year for my barn but I took it down and put it back in the box when football ended. I’ll bring it back out this fall might swap that one to the porch and put this old hunk of junk in the barn.
