Anyone have experience having a prop re-pitched? (as in going from 15 pitch to 14 pitch)

If so, what was your experience? Negatives? Positives?

Thanks

I guess my question to you is why do you want to change pitch by 1°?

Acceleration, full throttle rpm range?

Every inch of pitch +\- will change your rpm’s by around 200. Similar with diameter.

In the Houma area we always took our props to baggy

If you can find a dealer that will let you look at the manufacturers rigger's manual for the engine you got there is a chart in there that will tell you what you need to know. Motors typically shipped without props and the rigger decides what to put on it. Sometimes that ain't always right and they put whatever they have on it.

Couple years ago I bought a brand new Yamaha F70. The dealer initially put a 13 pitch SS prop on it. The RPMs were too high for that outboard - per the manufacturer's recommendations. I went back to dealer to get a 14 pitch prop but the prop manufacturer that he carries does not make a 14 pitch prop. So the dealer gives me a SS 15 pitch prop instead. Acceptable, but could be better. The hole shot took a noticeable hit, as well as the acceleration.

Fast forward to last weekend. and I hit some concrete. Didn't hit hard but enough to bend the 15 pitch prop. So, I take the now bent 15 pitch prop to a reputable prop guy. He tells me he can absolutely fix the bent prop to look brand new again. (for $150 + tax). We were talking numbers that i get out of the prop. So, I tell him that I thought a 14 pitch would be the best pitch for that boat and motor combination. He tells me that he can "re-pitch" that prop also. I didn't know that was possible. but it is. Told him I'll get back with him on the re-pitching part.

Since I got a 2 week wait for the bent prop fix I ordered an el cheapo aluminum 14 pitch prop off of Amazon. I take the aluminum prop for a ride this morning. I was correct on the 14 pitch prop being the best pitch for that boat/motor combination. Noticeably better hole shot and acceleration. Just better all around. It would be perfect if it were stainless steel.

So now I figure since my SS prop is being worked on I may as well get it re-pitched also and get the best performance out of everything. For a price, of course.

Just wondering if anyone has had a prop re-pitched and if there were any regrets afterward.

I changed mine two years ago. Got a new 4 stroke and it was turning 6150 max rpm (5200-6000 range on motor). It was also about 4200 rpm to go 30 mph.

I wanted to lower cruising rpm so I wanted to go from 19 to 21 inch pitch to drop it about 400 rpm. Prop guy told me to just do 1 inch of pitch to 20, and to add “cupping” to the blades. It would give me what I want cruising and only drop max rpm 200.

Now it turns 5950 rpm max and I cruise at 3600 rpm to do 30.

Extremely happy. Boat is just like I want now. Do it, it is worth it to get it running the way you want.

Gotcha.

Just remember that an aluminum prop blades are softer, and will “twist” more than SS, so at max operating range rpm, you may not be getting actual 14° pitch. Hope that it works out for you!

This is correct. An aluminum prop will "flex" under load. And give you more RPMs than a same size and pitch SS prop.

This morning, with the Aluminum prop, I reached 6400 RPMs. Yamaha recommendation for the F70 is 6300 RPMs. So, with a SS prop pitched at 14 I should be perfect.

Pitch varies between Al and SS props sometimes a great deal.
Call Power Texh in Shreveport and give them you boat and motor info. They will get it close and close is all you’re looking for with your setup.
After dealing with Coastal Propeller you would be surprised at the imperfections of most out of the box props sold.
