I need some wisdom. I put a ridical firearms 10.5” .300 AAC upper on an aero lower I assembled. Giselle parts kit, larue 2 stage trigger, jp silent capture buffer. Upper came with pistol length gas system, I’m using bcm bolt and carrier. The thing just doesn’t want to cycle. I’ve tried 5 different mags from 3 different manufacturers. Tried suppressed and not. Only shot subs so far as that’s really the only reason I built it. Everything is clean and lubed. What do I try next? Any chance the gas port is not the correct size? That’s really the only thing I can think of. Should I remove gas block and check port diameter? I’ve read bolt and buffer weights can affect cycling, but not sure how to determine if that is my issue. Could buffer spring be too stiff? I’ve built a few ar style rifles but never had issues so not sure how to troubleshoot. Anybody have any advice for an amateur like myself? Thanks.

Edit: after some more reading on JP enterprise website, it appears I should have used the heavier buffer option (tungsten weights vs. steel). Guess I’ll order the tungsten weights and swap them out and see if that helps.

In my experience it should still be cycling suppressed. What ammo are you using?

Usually when mine does that it’s the gas block is leaking

Yeah unless he was using some trash ammo, I was gonna suggest trying a more reputable brand of ammo and checking to make sure the gas ports are lined up, and that the set screws of the block are torqued down. I had issues with mine cycling subs without a suppressor before I got my Govnah, not that it mattered because the only reason I ever shoot subs is to take advantage of the suppressor.

Is the empty being ejected?
Or is it just not moving to the rear far enough to eject?

Two rifle that I built I had issues.

The 1st one actually ended up being the trigger.
The 2nd one was the gas port was too small. I drilled it out to the proper diameter and no issues since.

The buffer isn't there for recoil as much it's there to provide inertial dampening, setting up the correct dwell time before extraction starts. Too light of a buffer and it's trying to pull a case that is still obdurated in the chamber, essentially using up extraction energy on overcoming the friction between the case and chamber. If you were using full power loads you'd might see issues around the case head, stretching or deformation of the rim from the extractor. Worst case would be a case head ripped off or the extractor jumping the rim leaving a stuck case. I doubt the gas port is the issue, I'd try a couple of heavier buffers if you know anyone you could borrow from. I run heavy buffers in my 20" AR and 16" mid-length gas AR, Spike's ST3 and ST2 respectively. I think my 20" AR uses a mil-spec carbine drive spring and spacer and the 16" uses a slightly stronger spring though I don't remember for sure.

What type of buffer? CAR? H1? H2?

Nothing wrong with that carbine. It'll put holes in things reliably.

I’ve been shooting the Hornady 190gr sub-x. The buffer is what JP calls ‘standard’, so I guess that’s somewhere between carbine and h1? When shooting not suppressed it wouldn’t eject, but while shooting suppressed it has been sporadic about where the problem is. Sometimes it won’t grab the next round, sometimes it won’t fully close the bolt and I have to bump the forward assist.

I’ll try to make time tomorrow to check gas block alignment and set screws. Hopefully I don’t have to drill out the port. I’ll try some different weight buffers before I get to that point. Thanks for the advice.

Think the JP standard is 3.0 ounces.

Carbine Std: 2.8
H1: 3.6
H2: 4.7
H3: 5.6

That's using Colt's standards I think, every manufacturer has their own standards. Yours isn't much over stock, I'd try a H2.

Mine is a 9” BCM barrel with BCM bcg. Initially I ran a standard JP scs, and never a hiccup other than subs unsuppressed on occasion (ammo dependent) as mentioned. This was way back when all they offered was the standard option scs. When I was sizing my gas ports in the Govnah, the guy who made them said he recommended x size when running an H2 buffer. It just so happened JP was now making H2 scs’s, so that’s the only reason I upgraded to the H2 option.

Do you guys keep your mags loaded while in storage? I’m indifferent about it. I don’t shoot very often so I feel like I’d screw up my springs.

Cycles of compression and extension wear out springs, not keeping them compressed or extended. So keeping loaded mags is fine.

All of my pistol mags are loaded and I have around 10 AR mags loaded. Keeping them full won't hurt them

bbvdd, which New Frontier buffer weight did you go with?

Yup. 28 rounds in every one.

Just using a standard AR buffer for now.

if it does not shoot reliably, that will be the next step.

Are they Pmags? You can keep 30 in them with the "dust" cover on.

Got the last of these for $25 at my local Walmart. Gonna miss my beloved cheap WM ammo.
