Does it matter which type of gas block I get?

That's what I'm looking at next barrels and adj gas blocks. So any input y'all have would be great. Looking for a 10.5"

Noveske with switchblock is nice but pricey.

First thing it says in the description is the switch block does not fit under a rail...I want it to fit under a rail. I'd like to run a 9-10" rail on it...so what low profile adj gas block should I look at?

Seems like the LP adj gas blocks do not fit light weight barrels? Not a deal killer just narrows down the scope for looking at barrels.

I would really like to get into it but not sure where to start.

Reading this thread would be one place to start. Get familiar with the terms pieces/parts of an AR-15.
Do a little research online. AR15dotcom is a wealth of knowledge and they also have an AR assembly book you can download that shows the steps and tools needed to assemble the full gun.

Honestly Ive put together plastic model cars when I was 12 that were harder than this gun.

What makes the Noveske barrel worth 2x as much vs something like THIS?

The one in the link is a LW and is not dimpled but they will dimple it for me for free. I dont know if I want LW or not but I think I do.

1:7 twist, extremely high QC standards, and the name. Faxon makes great barrels too though from what I have heard.

If I plan to shoot cheep 55/65gr is the 1/7 really needed? THIS one is a 1/7 twist...looks like maybe there own brand?

Also was looking at THISone but its not dimpled and id have to get that done locally for around $60.

So I need a low profile gas block. Is there really a difference in quality in say $23 gas block vs a $50 one?

And what does an adjustable gas block do for me?

I dont know about the brands and price difference but being able to adjust the gas system can tune the rifle if your having issues with it running properly. I want one becasue I will have a 10.5" and will run a can most of the time so I may nee some adjustment.

So if I'm running just a standard 16" without a suppressor I shouldn't need an adjustable right?

No, 1:8 is fine with that. Check out ballistic advantage as well. Guarantee for under an inch and they aren't overly expensive

Outside of the quality of steel used, probably the quality of the finish machining and QC. Cheaper blocks are typically only reamed to final I.D. while better ones are reamed then honed creating a better fit and gas seal.

Thanks ill look at that too.

As for the gas block id go for the better quality one but for a 16" std ar I dont think you would need an adjustable one.

Anybody with any experience with 9mm builds?

I'm just curious how a blowback 9mm ar15 could work with a folding stock...

The nice gas block I've used seal great. Cheap ones I've used you can see some carbon leaking around the gas block but after 100 or so shots it builds up carbon around the leak and seals them up. I wiped up the excess carbon that leaked around it and haven't seen any more leaking.

What/Who's spec? Joe Manufacturer's spec? There's no official specification for gas port diameter. If you are buying a production barrel these days it is coming over gassed. Please list the "official" gas port spec sizes you are referring to for the various barrels and cite your source.

Colt, the original owner of the M16 FOW TDP...

14.5" Colt M4/6921: 0.062"

10.3" Colt Mk18: 0.070"

Here is the Mk18 .pdf put out by NSW-Crane:

Manufacturer don't disclose their GP diameter to the public, but they can be measured with a pin gauge. It's not hard to tell when a barrel is over-gassed. Some manufacturers are ported more appropriately than others.
