He's talking about the gas system. The Carbine length gas system is also known as an M4 gas system.

Got you. I thought M4 was only the chanber slot extensions that allowed for easier loading.

To those of you using Barking Irons for an FFL
They can NOT weld and pin a compensator or muzzle device for you, so keep that in mind. Brought my DD in today and was told it was not possible, so if you are considering the 14.5 AR builds and want to get it pinned, just know that you will have to look elsewhere to get the work done. As of now, I am not sure what I am doing with my own upper.
