That's my theory. You'll most likely find tiny particles and fragments.

Get away from those ballistic tips

THIS

I have seen some shots with BT's that never left an exit wound. If it dont drop them in their tracks then you may never find them cause of no blood trail.

Same old story. Had the same thing happen, 270 135 gr ballistic tip to my youngest brother. He was running dogs and shot a buck in the hind quarter, very close. Bullet went in, exploded, and never came out, deer kept running until someone put some 00 in him.

I told him to throw those bullets away.

I shoot a 7mm with ballistic tips. I dont often have a deer go anywhere, but if they do, not usually much blood. however, 90% of the time they melt right there without taking a step.

If you slow them down a bit, they are devastating.
I shoot hand loaded 130gr nosler ballistic tips.

Here's one I shot last year and the resulting blood trail. And yes, that's the EXIT wound.

actually just talked to little choupique.. they found exits.. but golf ball entry was odd..

hard to get him away from ballistic tips.. that's double digit deer with only two going more that 10 steps.. none more than 30.

A lot of people knock them, because a well placed shot is going to kill a deer. Where you'll see the biggest difference is if you hit them a little further back. I've never lost a deer, even when my shot placement isn't best (which doesn't happen often ).

ford/chevy
chocolate/vanilla
everyone has their favorite flavor.

i will say that in my lifetime the majority of fellers that i hunt with that seem to lose deer happen to be users of balistic tips. Does it happen every time, nope. Does it happen on a regular basis, yep, a few a year.
If i'm not mistaken, balistic tips were designed to fragment on impact and made to be used on small critters like yotes and those prairie dogs out west...

If they are shooting factory loads, they are probably a little peppy and not performing well.

No one's going to lose a deer with a heart/lung shot. The gut will plug up a hole pretty easy, but that can happen with any bullet.

agreed, stay away from the gut.. I ain't referrin' to a gut shot deer. I'm just talkin' bout people telling me they hit the deer in the engine room and saying it didnt bleed, and couldnt find, etc... Then the buzzards show em where their deer is a few days later and alot of them say they were shooting balistic tips... like i said,,, people buy and shoot what they want..
