Looking for recommendations for an obedience/gun dog trainer. South LA preferred, but willing to expand scope.

What type of gun dog, what type of hunting?

Carl Boudreaux. Bayou gauche. Old guy but fixed my lab. Wish I had found him sooner.

Do you already own the pup? What kind of dog? What are you expecting out of it? What’s your time and $ budget.
The best in the game will be at the Spring Grand in Natchez hosted by Baton Rouge’s Amite River Club. Go and talk to folks and you will find your trainer. Then you will need to convince them to take your pup.
Also to note, most of the dogs at the grand have had $10k plus invested in training.
You can get a started level dog with ~6 mos, HR level with 9 months, and finished level with 12+ months of training. You will need yearly tune ups or you better plan to spend a lot of time keeping that training up. Hunting alone won’t cut it for Hunt Test level dogs. Just depends on what you’re after.
Cost is 600-1000 month, depending on who is touching the dog.
Chuck McCall probably has the most dogs running in the grand from this area. The clients he has that are serious get their pups from his recommendation and agree to his program when they sign up. To get the best, you almost have to sign a life long contract with both breeder and trainer.

Really don’t know what you mean by this. Please clarify.

Brittany. My primary concern is tightening up her obedience and recall, but a foundation for comfort around guns and some basic retrieving with eye toward duck and/or dove hunting would be a nice bonus.

In my opinion, the top level dogs in any breed…lab, boykin, gsp, etc. will be in such high demand that the breeder will pick suitors that will give their dogs the best chance to succeed. In the Hunt Test circle, that means offspring get titles.
Best chance at getting titles will be owners that professionally train their dogs. Some breeders require an agreement for the dog to reach a certain level / certification, as well.
An FC afc x GRHrCh litter will not be sold to a casual hunter. Chances are the breeder will hand pick the owners. Those that can talk the talk and have plans for their puppy to train and reach a certain level will get the puppy.
Same goes for trainers. They don’t want just any dog. They only have so much space, sometimes even on their truck / trailer. They also want repeat business, aka longer term customers.
I’m not saying all are like this, but if you want the top dogs and top trainers, this is the game.

To the OP, just do your due diligence before you select a trainer. There are some good ones around and a lot that are not so good.
Regarding other info tossed out, very few breeders have the luxury of selecting their buyers. Only a very small percentage fall into that category. And never have I heard of any breeder requiring a potential owner to obtain “X” title before selling a pup to anyone. Heck, some of the best breedings I’ve ever seen have ended up total washouts. That’s something you just can’t predict no matter how good the breeding appears.

I have two friends who train in the Cenla area. One of them actually owns a Brittany that he hunts woodcock with. I can get you his information if you want.

Dick Russell in Baton Rouge, LA.
https://www.dickrusselldogtrainer.com/
I used him for my heeler and it really helped. The classes I went to were for obedience. I’m not sure about the hunting aspects, but he may be able to make a recommendation if he can’t do it.

Kyle Sculley river bottom retrievers
And you’ll have a good excuse to go to the beach a few times.

Brittany.
Look into Mike Small with Feliciana Gun Dogs or AJ Chicola with Majestic Kennels

Brandon Menard with Cypress Bottom Retrievers.
Located in St. Martinville.
He’s one of the best.
We went on vacation and he had our lab for a month. In that short time he could heel on command and all the other basics.
Over a year later, you can tell heel was drilled into his brain.

Also, don't send a pointing dog to a trainer that deals only in retrievers.

I have nothing to add, just following up to a similar thread from some time ago.
I got a FC (Grady) x (still running) QAA dog as a complete amateur about a year ago. My old trainer in MS had a nice kennel and grounds and I thought that was impressive. I got a rec from the breeder of my pup for a pro trainer in NE that mainly focused on Grands. Holy shite is that place on operation! He must have had a dozen workers, matching new Dodge diesels pulling 5th wheel 24-hole dog trailers, perfect water setups, etc etc. Purina Pro Plan was delivered by the pallet. The dog stayed for 5 months for a gun dog/force fetch/intro type program. Those 5 months cost just under 2x the expensive dog and that place was chock full. She will never be a top level trialdog due my financial unwillingness and other pursuits; but she is turning out pretty damn impressive even after I took over. She is a ball of fire and super aggravating, but I have high hopes that she will fit in perfectly running trails in the summer and in the field in the fall.
Good luck with the dog, OP.
ETA: Trial/trail illiterate
