In that price range it's gonna be hard to beat. Calumets are personal, so that's up to you. I love my 270win, but I like the 30-06 as well. 260 rem, 7mm-08, 308 would all be GREAT choices as well and the short action is nice.

That .30-06 is gonna kick like a rented mule but it will last him for many years and will take down any critter in North America.

I don't get the whole 30-06 recoil fear. Gotta get my old 06 out and see if I'm missing something. I guy I work with sold a pre 64 model 70 in 06 for 400 bucks cause he said it kicked too hard. FTR he replaced it with a 300 winny!

Holy shite, that's a helluva bargain if it was in good shape. MY pre-64 '06 kicks a lot less than most, of course with the scope, it clocks in at a healthy weight.

It's not a bad recoil, it's just more than most calibers someone would shoot when they are 13.

That's a good combo, but for a 13 year old might wanna go with something with a little less kick especially if he's not that used to shooting high powered rifles yet.

.270 would probably be better.

I almost threw up when he told me what he sold it for. It was in pristine condition too.

My opinion would that the 30-06 is a great round, but the 270 would probly be better for a kid. The 270 win pushing a 130 grain bullet is an outstanding round, crushes deer and is outstandingly accurate. The 06 pushing the 150 isn't bad, but I think it likes 165s better for accuracy. I will say that I haven't worked an 06 much though. Faxis needs to weigh in. He has a hot little 120gr round he loves, but you would have to reload.

The longest shot he's ever taken is 100 yards.

As much as I hate to start that argument, it really does.

Damn, I cried a little just then. I gave over twice that for mine, but it's an accurate mofo.

The biggest problem I would see with the 06 for a 13 year old is target practice. The one shot it would take to down a deer would be fine, however it would be the several boxes he should shoot to get used to the gun that could cause a problem. Well that's my opinion on the matter.

Same. My .270 kicks more than any 06 I've ever shot.

I bought a 7mm when I was 13 and I hated it because of the recoil. Quickly sold it and went back to my 243. A buddy shoots the 7mm-08 and it was his first gun and he still shoots it today. I would let him shoot the 243 so he's not scared of the recoil and can make a good shot with it. I had the vanguard s2 257 weatherby mag and it was an awesome gun with very little recoil.

For some reason I don't notice recoil so much. I do notice muzzle blast. Muzzle brakes drive me crazy. I think its because I was taught to shoot "right". What I mean by that is concentration and routine. The muzzle blast from a brake just throws my concentration off and fricks up my routine. If had learned to shoot with one it probably wouldn't bother me. I think before a kid shoots any center fire they should have shot thousands of 22 rounds, but I'm an old soul.

Not on the Canelas website. Not sure if Remington makes it though.

Academy has one for $380
