Brothers, below is a sketch of my back yard. I want to add some privacy shrubs on the east side and northwest corner. I also want to plant some trees in the northwest and southwest corners to frame the property. The two oaks and the cypress tree are staying, I could take or leave the pecan trees (they’re scraggly). Doesn’t need to be instant privacy, this is a long term approach.

Please provide thoughts on what I have sketched, any changes I should make, and what species shrubs and trees I should plant. Bonus points if I can dig up these trees/shrubs from somewhere and replant to save some money.

With you in NoColors,
Poochie

Arborvitae work very well as a privacy shrub.

Will let some one address the trees. I do love maples though.

Shumard Oak or Silver Maple give beautiful fall colors and shade extremely well.

Where are the gates for the backyard when you need to move around large items?

Driveway will come around from the east side of the house. There’s about ~15’ there. Driveway will follow the shrubs to the shed.

Are we to assume since the house and pecans are on the north side and the cypress is to the south, the yard slopes and the southern portion is wetter?

All pretty much the same. There’s a house past the cypress tree.

Note: Lafourche.

Green giants make a true privacy border. But be forewarned...If you plant them in good soil, they will become giants.

We ran a privacy wall of Red Tip Photinia’s on the side of our home so we didn’t have to look at my drunk brother in law sit on his back porch next door.... he now just walks over to our porch every evening.

Is this the home you'll live in forever?

I'm trying to ascertain if whatever planted will be your problem in 20 years, or someone else's.

Forever home. I’ll be the drunk neighbor, just trying to pre-contain myself.

The 'proposed new trees' section, i really like Wax myrtles. or a smaller magnolia.

Wax Myrtle

Dwarf Magnolia

kind of hard to tell what size trees you are talking about...as thats a pretty big backyard.

If you're looking for a bigger tree, Shumard Oak (i like the bigger, fuller leaves.

I’m picturing something tall and skinny along the edges to frame the corners (like cypress) and something shorter and fat in the front (like the oak or maple mentioned above).

Oh i’m well aware. That’s why poaching wax myrtles from some friends property may be my route.

For reference, the branch diameters of the “proposed trees” are shown at 25’-30’. The shrubs are shown at 10’ wide.
