they put transmitters on some and they were shocked because a bunch were in trees. (I can’t remember the %, but it was enough to shock biologists)

I've heard about this too. I choose to pretend they don't exist 99% of the time I'm in the woods.

They were surprisingly unaggressive.

This confirms what I have read in several articles. Normally unaggressive,

When I was a kid, an old-timer warned me about timber rattlers. He told me "they come looking for you". Another man said they could "leap 10 feet to strike".

I think those old guys were prone to some real exaggeration.

They will get up in beech trees in the spring and prey on baby squirrels.

Climbing into the upper limbs of any big tree to get at the squirrel nest???

I would have to see it to believe it.

I said the "upper limbs" of a big tree. Most squirrel nests seem to me to be way up in the UPPER part of big trees. A big beech, hickory, or white oak can easily get 80-100 feet tall.

So I would have to SEE a timber rattler that FAR up in a big tree raiding a squirrel nest to BELIEVE it.

I just don't think they would go that high up.

Could be wrong, but I don't think so.

I need to find the pictures at my mothers/grandmothers house of what a pit viper does to a 8 year olds leg, back in 1988. It wasn’t fun, it sucked pretty fricking bad and hurt like a SOB. I’ll let a Kingsnake pass, outside of that, all bets are off.

Stepped on one last year during early bow season. If it had been an eastern I might not be here typing this.

Prettiest snake in this part of the country, but the idea of that thing in a tree is nightmare fuel

Well now I have something to think about while wading through the flooded timber this winter…
