Last coyote I shot was on a pipeline right of way in a wooded swamp. Heard cows/calves moving fast through the trees and crossing the right of way. Saw one coyote following, moved the browning 223 a bolt in position. Had two more sneak by and I popped the last one on the run. Hung his carcuss on the fence

Well in terms of evolutionary time frame yotes are a new phenomenon east of the MS. Hell there are places on the east coast that have just had yotes arrive in the past 10 years.
True, but red wolves populated the entire east coast well before the white man arrived. We extirpated them. Now, Coyotes are just filling that vacant niche.
With all that being said, I would guess that sub-divisions and strip malls fracturing the landscape are much more damaging to deer populations than anything else talked about in this thread. THOSE are what our native cervids have not evolved around. I know here it's a massive problem here as many of the new homes being built are on the previous lands that large herds of deer used as winter range.

Deer have adapted very well to urbanization in most areas. I haven’t looked at the numbers in awhile but at one point it was estimated that modern populations exceeded pre-colonization numbers, after almost going extinct in the early 1900s. One thing humans have done is knock down old growth canopy and replace it with either agriculture or things deer can reach.

I was in my shed right before daylight a few years ago with no lights on and I heard my little dog off in the back start yelping like he was running for his life.
I ran out there and saw him running toward me followed by some dark coyote shapes and I just raised my hands and hollered at them while running at them. They scattered quickly but later I wondered if there was any chance they would have attacked me.

True but the density of the populations between the two makes it almost an apple to orange comparison. Not to mention the amount of deer there was then compared to now.
Regardless there is a lot of new information out there that yotes east of the MS kill a lot more than deer than those west of the river and it is has a bigger effect than ever thought before. Direct herd reduction has been documented in localized areas from yote predation.

Like the way coyote blood looks on thermal! for the coyote lover. He has probably never heard a pack of coyotes kill a newborn calf. The sound of a calf being killed will never leave you.

what is normal mortality on fawns without predation. With just a few quick google searches, seems like it's close to 50%.
Is not

Only an average of one in two survives its first three months of life, which is when most mortality occurs. Predation by coyotes, black bears and bobcats accounts for most mortality.

Damn they are still that high, I thought you could get a decent one for like 2500 now?

fawns have it rough. my buddy in texas last year knew exactly when a fawn was born. there were a ton of buzzards and would circle constantly. Kill a new fawn and devour it in minutes.
years ago it was fire ants killing them.
