It's called adaptive strategy. Power-train control modules have haven been doing this for years. It doesn't take thousands of miles but probably a few weeks and/or a few hundred miles. If you change your driving habits or conditions it will adapt after the same amount of time. But if the battery is disconnected for any reason it will have to "relearn" again. All Makes and Models do this.

Putting "Eco" in the name of that motor was a genius marketing move on Ford's part.

They do get above average mileage numbers, but just not in the configuration that most people have. Well played Ford

From everything I've seen they get about the same mileage as my hemi with the old/crappy 5 speed. I normally average about 14 and have managed a 21 mpg avg on trips from LA to FL. Though, I admit, that is going off the computer...not a hand calc.
Still good for a truck

Wishing I would have kept my Yuon XL, it got average 17.5 MPG. Mostly hiway but that was average, 24 straight hiway. 70 mph.

Yeah, but can you do 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds? Didn't think so.

3.55 4x4 offroad supercab (not supercrew).
15 mpg lifetime. A lot of driving in city and I notice I get about the same driving in the city as I do towing on the highway. When just driving on the hwy and watching my speed I'm up around 20mpg.
Last fishing trip leaving from west Houston down to Galveston with 18 ft bay boat (estimating 3k lbs all-in) for the full trip I got 13 mpg round trip including towing through bullshite stdart-stop downtown Houston area traffic. On the way back cruising at 65 mpg with a side wind I had 15 mpg straight across the fuel economy chart for about 30 minutes.
Yesterday I had a bed full of corn sacks and got 19 mpg out to the lease which was mostly highway. Over 20 mpg on the way back.
I took the traditional break-in approach and hammered down on her for the first 1k, before I ever put a trailer on her or thought of cruise control.
