quote:you need to elaborate on this post. Did your fishing habits change? (more salt vs fresh) how often do you fish now vs back then? how often did you clean your reels? Did you clean them after each use? The gold calcuttas were made for saltwater use. The silver ones were not.
Guys I was a die hard Shimano user until I bought a couple Chronarchs a few years ago and they both were junk and fell apart after just a couple years using them. I had Citicas lasted me 10 yrs and I am still using Calcuttas I bought over 10 years ago. The new ones just don't hold up the same for the amount of money they cost. I will not buy another Shimano reel after that. I bought 3 Revos last year and like them so far.
Fished brackish water and fresh for a long time and never really had reel issues. Started fishing offshore with higher salinity levels and things started going to shite. We now buy cheap arse reels just for offshore fishing and throw em in the trash when they crap out.

My dad has a Bantam Curado that he bought when I was in junior high and I'm 24 now, and he fishes A LOT. It's his favorite reel and still going strong.

Had my new Chronarch for a couple months now, really enjoying it. Very similar to last year's Curado but apparently with a few more corrosion-resistant features, i.e. treated ball bearings, etc. ?
so far so good

Core 50mg FTW! I wadefished everyday for an entire summer with one last year and didn't have a problem one.
For those that don't mind spending the money get that reel and a 6'6 Skeleton rod for all around wadefishing setup

What's the advantage of a shorter rod for wade fishing? I've been wondering this, seems like a lot of rods geared towards wade fishing are in the 6'6"ish range. Seems like longer would be better for further casts.

I'm not sure to be honest, I just feel like the 6'6 is a good rod for all situations.
Redfish in the Marsh, Topwaters on the reef, Jigheads out into deeper water.
It's just what I've always used, the 7' just seemed like too much for me. I think the longer rods work better if you're fishing the surf because sometimes you need to get it out past the 2nd or 3rd bar whatever the case may be.
Most of the time when I wade fish its belly button and down, so I can get plenty long casts with a 6'6

I hear ya. I was just curious. I like longer rods for almost all my fishing. I had to convince my brother today that he would like a 6'8" rod...he never fished with over a 6'6". I guess it all depends on what you're comfortable with.

Now I like a 7 footer for pretty much every kind of bass fishing except for working topwaters.
I guess mainly I fish topwaters for trout/redfish and I find it easier to get a walk the dog action with a shorter rod.

I don't think I've ever tried it with a shorter rod
The shortest rod I use consistently is my 6'6" worm rod, and I'm realizing I would rather something like a 6'8" for that now. And my topwater rod is something like 6'2, but I hate it, and will replace it soon.

Yeah worm rod, I use a 7 footer with a pretty good back bone and a light tip.
Actually one of the better rod and real combo's I've used for bass fishing was a Bass Pro Rick Clunn Special only $150.
I've never really spend much money on my bass fishing stuff because it's not quite as demanding as wadefishing in the Saltwater.
