Need some good drill bits

All of mine are sharp as a butter knife. Just got a bench press and looking for a decent set. Using for small welding projects.
Or should I just buy a few individual bits that would be most popular size and get good quality.
How much is a quality set. My last one was craftsman and they were decent when new.
Really don’t know what to look for.

If you can learn to sharpen them using a bench grinder you can save a bunch of $.
YouTube videos for days and it's not that hard.

Was wondering about that. Will look it up.
Thanks.

Drillco makes goods bits. They’re made in Baton Rouge. You can get them at a welding supply shop

You need to call Max at Winter’s Drill Bit City . I met him at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville Ky several years ago and I have been buying from him ever since. The stuff he sells is high quality and is what I use on my farm. When buying bits a quality left hand bit set is also handy for getting out broken bolts.
If you decide to buy local look for cobalt bits. They will cut stainless and hardened steel pretty well.

Agree cobalt is the way to go. They cut through hardened steel with ease. Slow speed, minimum pressure, and a drop of oil or two if thick metal.
Downside they are more brittle so no flexion allowed when advancing the bit. Which is perfect for a drill press.

Cle-Line HSS jobbers and mechanics drills. Get a set of 1/16 to 1/2 inch in 1/64th increments and a steel index case for under $70. American made, HSS, and I've never had one as much chip an edge yet. I only use them in my drill press with plenty of cutting oil.

Chicago Latrobe makes a nice cobalt bit. I’ve sold a lot of drill bits. Half the time they break or wear out due to operator error.

I should have invested in a drill press years ago. Trying to push a hand held through can't be good for bits.
Thanks OB
Got some things to look at.

They are not made in Baton Rouge. Dillco is just a import/wholesaler of drill bits and other cutting tools located in Baton Rouge. The only thing that is made there is they grind some of their carbide burrs in house.
You could get a Drill Doctor and sharpen your old bits or I would look into the Dewalt pilot point bits. The only problem with those is when the get dull they are pretty much done.
ETA: If you look at the Dewalt don’t do the titanium bits. Look for either DW1969 or the DWA1269 which is cobalt.

if you're drilling into hard metal, set the press to the slowest speed setting ,use cutting oil and the bits will last forever and they will cut thru the same speed. Hell, just go to Harbor Freight and buy the slow silver and deming low speed set they have. Works great in my press on all metals I've drilled so far.

100 bucks from Fastenal for high temperature, high speed drill bits. They have a life time replacement as well. I use these for stainless regularly and they're amazing.

Well I know that they make their reamers in Pennsylvania, so no, they aren't just an importer.
