I recently received permission to fish a private pit that’s in between my property property in SELA, near the SWMS state line and my home.

This pit is right at 260 acres and without a doubt there’s no body of water within a 200 mile radius that is as beautiful as this place. The water is aqua blueish/ green unbelievable clear. I can be in 8 feet of water and see the bottom. I have an 11 acre pit on my place that is great and catch great fish. This other pit though is something is a 1 in a million. Say if I had unlimited funds to dig a pit 150+ acres on my property, there’s no way I could make it as perfect as this one turned out. It wasn’t designed with fishing in mind and they started digging this pit in the 50s and pumping sand and gravel all the way up to 83 when I was born. Since then, in the last 40 years it hasn’t been mined and was rarely ever fished. The only people that fish this place now is my brothers and I and the owner fishes it possibly half a dozen times a year.

Anyway, we caught some monsters pre spawn and spawn and and bunch of sacalait on things like chatter baits and soft plastics while bass fishing. We haven’t made a trip targeting specifically sacalait yet but will this weekend.

What color jigs would y’all use in water this clear? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don’t pan fish much. What kind of cork would you expert pan fisherman use? I’m sure most colors will work because it’s just slap full of fish. Also, would y’all use feather jigs or plastics with a curly tail or straight tail with the small paddle design at end of tail? Appreciate it guys.

I/16th oz lead head jig with a pearl colored 1&1/2” tube. This is a clear water crappie killer! Drop to bottom and lift rod tip a few inches continuously but slowly.

Garland Baby Shad in your choice of: monkey milk, blue ice, opening night or mayfly. All you will ever need.

Yeah buddy, I'm going to have to join you and get clearance to fish too before I can give the best recommendation.

Hell, I’d love to have a really good sacalait fisherman come out there with me to help me find them. During prespawn and spawn they’re easy to find and get on but in a 260 acre pit when they leave the beds and disperse, I’ve struggled finding them. I just haven’t sacalaut fished much outside of prespawn the last 15 years

In water that clear it's more important to mimic their natural forage than most of the "look at me" combinations it takes to get their attention in "average" water.

Live minnows or something that really really looks like a live minnow.

I would start with what a fellow said above, the Garland baby shad in Monkey Milk color.
