I want to get into long-range target shooting, but I want a caliber appropriate for my son to use the rifle out West for hunting big game such as elk.

If I had to pick one caliber for both, it'd probably be 30-06. If you load your own ammo it would work pretty well.

But I agree with everyone else about 2 rifles.

You wont want to shoot a light heavy hitter very much and you wont want to carry a heavy heavy hitter much.

For backcountry longer range big game hunting, check out a lightweight rifle in 300 wsm. Not as much factory ammo available as a 300 WM, but it is a short action instead of long action. Really similar ballistics as a 300WM. Every ounce counts if you’re planning to hike in a ways.

How old is your son and how much hunting experience does he have?

Under 16 years old: 30-30 lever action
Little to no hunting experience: 30-30 lever action

16 or above and with hunting experience: 308 Winchester

28 or above with massive hunting experience: 7mm Mag

My 12 year old daughter can handle it.

10 year old son can shoot it.

They are really tall kids but they shoot it well.

It's a little long for my 10 year old stock wise so he shoots a 7.62x39 with soft points or the 8m3 round. The collapsible stock make adjusting for him easy.

My 8 year old can shoot the 223 wylde with federal fusions with the stock all the way in with more practice.

A 30 cal is the answer for elk and up. 300 win mag is proven and readily available. I shoot a 6.5 PRC for anything below elk and a 300WM for elk and up. Won't let you down.

The same thing that is great for killing an elk at 700 yards isn’t going to be fun to shoot at the range

Amen. Great way to learn bad habits.

If you’re serious about it, you might want to talk to these people.

For all in tents and porpoises this SHOULD be rendered obsolete by the .33 nosler and 338 norma but I guess time will tell.

The new stuff coming out is as optimized as a gunpowder burning shoulder fired cartridge can be designed.
