Concealed carry is purely reactionary. But I agree with Broke 100% that it gives you an option. It may not be the best option for every situation but it's an option nonetheless.

If I am driving down the road and a wreck happens in front of me. I can hit the shoulder. But what if there isn't a shoulder. That's a damn good option that I no longer have. I wish that shoulder was there.

And for those who think I'm some gun crazed dummy looking to pull one out, I'm a trained former US soldier who shot on the state pistol team for 8 years. I've never pulled a gun on a person and never want to pull a gun on a person.

I agree with this. I'm all for gun rights and refuse to live in states that don't recognize this. However, it takes a lot to make me "uncomfortable", because I like to enjoy life too much to waste it on worrying about scenarios that are very unlikely to happen.

A dude jumps out of a doorway in front of my daughter and screams "ARRRRRRRRRR" about 2 feet from her. My instinct was to step back and see if I needed to engage in some way and remembered that I only had my fists at that point.

If you would have been carrying your gun, would your instinct have been to step back to see if you needed to shoot a pirate?

Man some these responses on the ob are throwing me for a loop. Crime happens everyday in "safe" places, but hey some of you have a 6th sense and can avoid these situations. I, myself, am unable to spidey sense my way out of dangerous encounters (as rare as they may be) so I carry basically everywhere I can. Armed robberies happen in every part of Baton Rouge/New Orleans, so maybe I should just avoid those cities according to some posters.

Carrying is going to do nothing for you in those situations, but a bad guy will get one more free gun

I would indeed have shot a pirate.

no, you can carry whenever you want, I don't care

its the "I feel vulnerable and scared when I don't carry" type of thought that I find to be a bit disturbing and paranoid

You live in a bubble. I've seen evil. I've seen evil I can't even describe. It exists. Keep pretending that it doesn't.

And the choice to do so is why I love this country. Well, the states that "allow" it at least...

So I should have no defense in that situation? Just assume that I'll get robbed at some point in life and have no option to deter it?

Hey guys, pack it in. There is nothing we can do to deter crime or defend ourselves other than self awareness.

That's crazy. Everyone knows a spear gun is better for sharks.

But we shouldn't swim there because it's a dangerous place and we can prevent shark attacks by not swimming there. Because I am self aware I can avoid being attacked by just not going where the sharks are.

no man. shark attacks are sometimes unpredictable. if they were predictable, nobody would get attacked by them.
