He honestly needs the gun taken away for a while. Hopefully the wife will do that. He then needs to enroll in a gun safety course. You say he's the safest guy you know, but no one I know has ever had a brain fart like that around guns.

Seriously, no flame here...he needs some help.

I understand accidents happen and I try to never say never, and most gun accidents happen to people that have been handling firearms their whole lives but what happened to your friend was just stupidity on his part.

I remember one time, at 16 when a thunderstorm came up while dove hunting. Headed for Dads truck, took one out of chamber, left mag full.

It happened ONE time, and one time only. Let's just say my Pops was a err on side of safety guy!!!!

As is his son.

Just stupid.

I can think of at least three or four times he should have cleared mag. In field, at truck, prior to cleaning, he'll how do you not see brass staring at you to put bolt in.

I agree there is simply no excuse for that. There is a methodical way I take every single time I'm cleaning a gun. I do not skip steps, and I have never had anything like this happen.

gun safety cannot be overstated.

True. True. True. True.

One of my best friends died a few months ago while dove hunting with his twin brother and father. He had a 12 gauge resting on his shoulder while sitting on a bucket. The gun slid down and somehow went off in his face. He did not have a pulse when they got to him and they could not recognize him. Rushed him to hospital and got airlifted to Jackson. Was in a coma for a few days with very little brain wave activity and died early one morning. It really hit me hard because I had known him and his brother since pre school and we were very close friends. And to know I almost went with him that day.

Can not stress gun safety enough!!!

Only hope is to take any and all of his weapons to someone else's house for safe keeping. After something like that, nothing less could/would make the other(s) in the home feel safe.

Damned shame it happened, but he has no one else to blame...

Rule #1 - never store a gun with the bolt closed.

I keep my bolts in a separate compartment of my gunsafe with my ammo. Bad deal for your buddy.

I have a friend, a gunsmith, that shot and killed himself with a gun in his shop (accidently) trying to remove a jammed round from a pistol and he was the best I have ever known, it can happen to anyone I guess

That is what I was thinking. My rifle gets unloaded before leaving the stand. Same with shotguns in a duck blind.

I remember when this happened not too long ago at the BC BPS. I can't believe anyone would let this happen. It's like getting in the shower with your clothes on. It just doesn't make sense.

I remember one time I forgot to put my mag "IN" to go hunting one time. I've never failed to clear the gun *knock on wood*

Its happens pretty regular at the shooting range I go to. People bring loaded firearms to the range and then shoot themselves while taking it out of the vechile. Guy took one in the chest last year with a deer rifle pulling the gun out of the trunk of his car.

Which is why I have never been a fan of public shooting ranges. I try to shoot at my property as much as I can. Even during the concealed carry class I took there were several that scared the shite out of me.
