And she had to have surgery to repair her lip.

She claims she was giving him a kiss when it thundered and he
bit her out of fear.

I think she should get rid of the dog. He’s a year old and has never
bitten before, but $1500 (so far) in medical bills and the fear
of another bite incident has me “upset”.

A fluke? Not sure how to proceed.

I posted on OB because I want serious responses. I know some
of you have years of experience with dogs and dog behavior.

Thanks in advance.

I once had a dog bite my daughter when she was young. I promise there was no chance that dog ever bit anyone again.

I hope she smacked the living shite out of it. Never let a dog get away with that even if they are scared.

That’s a rough spot and none of can advise you correctly. Is the dog fixed? Was is thunder or the kid handling the dog a little rough? (Dog should not have bit either way)

Good luck

Well, my daughter is grown. But she’ll follow my advice if I push, but I
don’t want to over-react.

If she's grown it's her call but, as a dad with two daughters (grown) I get where you're coming from.

I use to have two dogs and when my daughter started crawling she would crawl near 1 one of them and it would always growl, now I have one dog. Wasn’t easy but it was the right choice.

You should never get real close to a dogs face. It’s kind of crossing the line. They really need to be used to you.

German Sheppard's are often seen as tough, bad dogs but are really known as 'fear biters'. The perceived aggression of the breed is usually their response as a generally fearful dog. My opinion is that it could absolutely happen again. Might not, but is it worth the chance?

That’s my take. Just not worth it.
I know she loves the damn thing.
The whole situation stinks.

She’d never allow for that. But I agree in a way because I
wouldn’t want him to bite anyone else...fear or not.

Roll the dice if you want but just realize a German Shepherd has long canine teeth which are perfect for ripping flesh. Even if the dog bites out of fear, it can do considerable damage. What if the dog had gotten your daughter's eye instead of her lip? They can easily disfigure a human face, especially a child's.

Personally, it's not worth the risk.

I’d give it another shot. If he does it again, get rid of him

I’m control dog training. Morris Chaisson. I had a similar issue. Give him a call. Guy is a miricale worker. You will be surprised.

German Sheppards also have the strongest jaws of any breed. Rottweilers and Pitbulls are the next two.

It sounds heartless, but if it were me I'd put it down. You could give it away or have it trained but if it's already exhibited this biting behavior you never know when it could flip the switch again.

It would be one thing if it had snapped at a hand but biting a face is unforgivable in my opinion.
