I have an Outback wilderness that can go places stock trucks can't here in Colorado. X Mode solves mud and deep snow issues of cvt like in the video.

I grew up with a jacked up '79 CJ5 and wouldn't switch for anything.

Yeah i read about the tranny reprogramming for x mode.

But that chain & pulley system doesn’t seem to last.

Back in the 70s, my dad had a late 40's stock Willy's Jeep with those hard skinny knobby tires that would go straight up the mountains in KY, while dudes with their CJ's and fat mud tires would all spin out and couldn't make it up the same hill. I suppose the skinny tires would cut through the mud and get down to something solid while the fat wide mud tires would sit on top of the mud and spin. Probably had alot to do with gearing as well.

I had a 46 Willy's in high school with the same tires and a flat head 4 cyl and that thing would climb a pine tree if you weren't careful...it would go anywhere...constantly pulling full size trucks and SUVs out of mud holes. It wouldn't do but about 40 MPH and would beat you to death but it would go anywhere you asked it. They used to advertise them as tractors and they weren't far from it...

Does not compute. I thought they would not sell you a Subaru unless you were a lesbian with a school boy haircut. ...JK. I am thinking they are probably pretty awesome but I don't think it would be big enough for my fat arse.

When I was young, my uncle had ab 81 AMC Eagle wagon. That thing was pretty beastly out in the S Louisiana mud.

I had a 2006 Outback 5 speed. It was more towards the base model. And Back then they were even more rugged. On gravel roads that suspension would allow you to embarrass pick up trucks.

There's a popular 2" lift kit for the Outback. It's a great rig.

Also big in Alaska. In the 80's and 90's they were Toyota reliable. My brothers first wife brought one up from Montana in the 70's. One of my nephews was driving it into the 90's.

They're good in mud and any trail systems. I think they suffer from breakover angles and departure angles and shite that even your stock jeep would have. of course they don't have locking diffs either, which is a critical difference also.

they'll do more than you think, and still less than you want if you're a real "off-roader." they're perfect for anyone who can possibly be lured into buying them.
