Been looking around for good boat to go after ducks in.

Hunt a lot of shallow backwaters From what I understand, something with a flat bottom would serve me better than a true V hull. But something with a modified V upfront would give me a better ride.

Can you share your setups, recommendations or got to haves? I just want to beat some of y’all to your blind catahoula

I have an 18x51 prodigy boat. I bought it with a gator tail and then switched to an outboard because I pretty much quit duck hunting and found myself fishing a lot. It’s a flat bottom with a v rake. The v pushes the water from waves out instead of over the top like an all flat bottom. I had 3 seat bases put in the floor so I could put seats for me and 2 buddies when we were in the blind. It has a flip up blind on it. It’s a good boat for duck hunting, I just wish I would have known I was going to put an outboard because I would’ve made it 19x60. But for a mud motor, the 18x51 is pretty much perfect. Also, I would make sure you get a hunt deck and add corner steps on the hunt deck. Makes it easier to get in and out with waders on. Gatorglide and hydro turf are 2 good products for a duck boat too.

Build an Uncle J. I had a timber creek before and my new uncle J shits all over that boat. Great company and would 1000% build another rig with them.

This is on my to do list. I made a thread about go devils and gator tails and outboards. I'm trying to absorb more about freshwater boats, but the baws I duck hunt with have had their boats forever and they're just aluminum boats with an outboard or a gator tail or go devil. I'm sure you can find a good boat used but if you didn't know boats well or know the seller (as in my case) I would be hesitant. For hunting rivers and freshwater lakes and swamps is the flat bottom better than a v hull if it gets super shallow?

Yeah, flat bottoms draft less water. Also going to be better for jumping over logs and those arse chapping stumps that sit an inch under the water.

Thanks, that is what I thought. It will probably be a while of researching and saving but I'll get a duck boat eventually. Alot of public land spots open up when you have a good boat that you otherwise couldn't hunt. That and finding a spot on a river and getting in good with some locals and building a floating blind or something.

Might look into a pirogue or kayak in the meantime just to have.

I don’t think that’s the one. The one I was looking for is a few years old

Just texted a childhood buddy who grew up on the lake all the time and he said to look at these: Allumicraft, Express, Allweld, and Uncle J Custom Boats. He has a custom Uncle J with a slick bottom that is 18/60 and said its the best boat he's ever had. He mentioned not going smaller than 16/48, and preferably 17/52. Not sure what motor he is running on the Uncle J. but this is CenLa duck hunting and mainly on the lake. This may change if you are hunting in a different kind of area.

Save your money from a “duck boat” and go on 2-3 trips a year to Arkansas or the Midwest for some nice weekends.

I only say this from the last 5 years of duck production in Louisiana.

if he is in North La, he can use a boat on public land in Arkansas or La if he wanted. Presuming he has the right state licenses and all the paperwork. Plus a lot of people fish out of their duck boats.

That’s what I do but I hunted Delacroix. Opening day 2019 I didn’t shoot my gun. That was it for me. Sold my boat and go on trips.

What size you looking for? I have a 18x52 custom with a 70 yam with very low hours.

Not positive I am selling but would entertain an offer.

Just took deliver of an 18x60 Uncle J with a 40 GTR right before Christmas.

Love the boat. Definitely recommend the company, when I was putting together my build sheet with Jason, he told me that if it can be made out aluminum, he’ll build it. Just costs money

All the coonasses used outboards to crawfish the swamps before go devils. If you need to jump logs, long tail, got to back out of thick shite prodrive. If you know where you’re going, and want to do it fast, gatortail. They all have their pluses and minuses.

I know I’m pretty set on gator tail or mud buddy. Had a long tail on a little 14ft job boat to beat around the barrow pits in and felt like I was fighting it more than getting its actual use.

I wouldn’t be opposed to purchasing a used a rig with outboard and jack plate to run during summer for fishing

I have owned a 16/36 godevil duck skiff for the last 8 years. In 2016 I changed the 16hp long tail to a 25hp mud buddy mini. I hunt the marshes of Southwest LA and I can hide this boat with ease just by running it into the Roseau canes and popping the blind up. It’s been a great boat, but with son wanting to take buddies hunting, I had to get a bigger boat. This one will be up for sale at the end of the season. It’s a great boat to get to places others in larger boats can’t.
