What's the reason behind that?
Permafrost prevents draining and runoff. So water pools on the surface, which attracts mosquitos.
The worst mosquito problems are in mountain valleys and in the arctic tundra.

Mosquitos are bad here in July. As long as you stay above tree line or keep a smoke pot around it isn't too bad. The white socks are what I hate. I just keep a bug net on when I am out. I have gotten used to it so it is not too bad. To me, having to keep an eye out for bears is a larger concern.

Take your shoes off before entering a neighbor's house. Everyone up there does that.
Don't try to pet any wild animals, especially moose and bears. A guy got killed trying to pet a moose outside my brothers health club. When we were checking into a cabin at Denali, they told us a guy got killed by the dumpster the week before we arrived.
My brother is a PE who worked for the government (Dept. of the Interior/MMS-Oil & Gas). He lived in Eagle River for 10-12 years. Met two wives up there and had two kids by the first one.
Was a great place to visit. All of your friends and family will think it's a trip they have to take, with you up there. I mad seven trips up there. Still have a nephew there, so I could make another trip or two.
So many weekend drives to take. You can do a day drive to Seward to see the glacier.
Fishing for salmon was always great. The one time we chartered a boat to fish for halibut off of Homer, it was too windy. No problem because in Homer there are bars you can walk to, that are open 24 hours in the summer.
Camping on the beach at Homer is a must do vacation when you've got a week to waste. Get up really early and see eagles eating fish. Sea lions offshore and whales out in the deep water.
Enjoy it while you're there, and let the relatives come up, and take them out to the woods, rivers, mountains, etc.
