I’m waiting on my buddies to pick me up right now. We will drive all night, get to the farm at daylight, hang stands/cameras, take a 2 hour nap and be hunting tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t know how many more years we can do it this way (we are in our 40s) but it’s always a blast. And exhausting the first day.

I need to stop pacing my driveway.

this is why I drive up alone. I can't stand waiting on folks

A couple of years ago two of my buddies rode together and somehow turned a 14 hour drive into a 22 hour drive. They ended up in Kansas like Dumb and Dumber.

Is opening day of rifle (16) too late to effectively call?

No indeed. I’ll be hunting the 15th-20th, maybe the 21st if I don’t tag out before, and I’ll be calling the entire time. I probably won’t do much rattling, but I’ll for sure be grunting and flipping a can call(doe bleat). During the peak rut, I want to sound like a buck that has a doe pinned down, to try to piss off a mature buck that thinks there’s another buck on a doe in his territory.
I may do some rattling, but I think it’s more effective earlier when bucks are trying to establish dominance. By rifle season, I feel like they’re more worried about does, than going investigate a fight between 2 bucks.
I’m not saying any of this is 100% though. Some bucks are more passive and will go the other way to avoid a confrontation with another buck.
Also, I’ve had more success calling to deer I can see, rather than blind calling. If you see a buck chasing a doe and you can’t get a shot, grunt. If he stops, grunt again and get ready. Snort wheezing actually works too. I’d probably never do it down here, but up there it’s fighting words

Not sure what part of the state you will be but we hunted 2022 2023 opening wknd of rifle in the western middle part of the state near Clinton. And both weeks they responded to grunts and ratteling. I killed a buck 2022 on opening day evening coming to a grunt call all bristle up and he was snort wheezing. We all saw numerous chases and does running around bleating and bucks fighting. Definitely not too late where we were.
