Guess that explains why the Garmin InReach failed.

Zapped into oblivion.

What a way to go, damn. I don’t play with lightning, shite scares me for real.
I watch "Swamp People" from time to time and in one episode the gator hunters were out when a big storm blew in with high winds, driving rain and a lot of lightning.
The only time I've been on the water in similar conditions I was wanting to be back at the house in the worst way. On the water in an open metal hulled boat in a lightning storm is not my idea of a good idea.
Probably the only saving grace for those two hunters is that it was so quick they didn't even know what hit them, but dying at that age is such a shame.

I got caught in a lightning storm close to my house recently, and it occurred to me that i was on a hike with my weighted backpack. I was basically a walking lightning rod creating friction the whole way. I felt very vulnerable and will admit that I was not my best mental self in that summer storm.
Related to them, I spent a week in Leadville, Colorado this summer and those storms popped off the whole time I was there. Prayers for these men’s families.

Wild that lightning killed both of them, terrible. I wonder if they were under a tree together riding the rain out when it hit the tree or something.
I read on Fox they were found sitting at the base of a tree that showed signs of a lightning strike. They showed signs of mild burns.
I grew up in SW La. Once while fishing the marsh, a thunderstorm rolled in. Our egress was to ride back up the Intracoastal through the storm to the ramp. We didn't make it. We pulled up on the levee and laid down on the outside slope in the grass. The lightning was intense and otherworldly. I remember seeing the a thousand branches and leaders off the main bolts around us. I wasn't sure we would make it.

Yes struck by lightning. Hopefully they didn’t suffer much

quote:damn that sucks. Horrible decision in a lightning storm. You want to in the open as much as possible and crouched to the ground with minimal contact. Make yourself as low and round as possible. Ditch the gear under a tree. And pray for the best.

And if you have a pack on, sit on it.
