Sidebar question, did not want to start a separate thread...

Why would anyone build a home in this area that is going to be flooded every 5-10 years? Do they have so much money they can afford it? How do they get loans to do this?

if youre in the path of the spillway land is cheaper for that very reason, also before 2011 the Morganza Spillway hadn't been opened since 1976

What do yall think about the river in the spring? I feel like it'll never go down through spring. Once all the snow melts, it'll be just as high in May as it is now.

It will go down some between now and the annual spring flood. Noone knows for sure, but my guess is that it will be a typical spring, or perhaps a little above normal. I'm basing this on the fact that it's already cresting in Osceola and dropping fairly fast just north of there.

there isn't a lot of snow and ice to melt this year - spring won't be close to this unless it keeps raining like this up north

Thank you for your service. I was in the Army Reserves. After joining I wish I would have joined the Gaurd. These guys are true American Heroes.

When everyone else is evacuating, the Gaurd is running head on into the effect area. There a lot to be said about a person who can do so even if they are ordered to.

Thanks

There goes my dad's camp. Again. I realize it's just a camp but my brother worked his arse off to get it back to useable. Took a while. Again, at least it's not their home. But shite.

Right near the RR near the 3 control structures .. near Simmsport/Letsworth? Never been there myself .. my dad and brother bought it together and my other brother is the one who did repairs. I hate to see this happen again as it was their man spot. Dad's not old but too old for this again.

by using the spillways to control it. Otherwise, this crest level would have been fluctuating over the past week or so.

The Corp & Levee guy believe they handle what is coming at them. They have flat out nailed the forcast so far & will continue to do so. They will pretty much live on the levees until the water goes down. Thier forcast includes the triggers & accout for the opening of the spillways.

Hope this works ... this is their camp from the 2011 floods. Brother said that they're on the highest ridge around and they had 22+ inches of water. Dad was sick then and I'm sure he's sick now.

There will be someplaces that will be distroyed in the path of the release. One failure just about anywhere would be a biblical disaster also. The Corp & Levee guys will be busy. But- They are very confident with what is headed their way currently. I'm sure we will have some close calls. Its hope, pray, & help thy neighbor time.

Side question: I want to say someone posted about the Morganza Spillway Bridge over 190 being "damaged" the last time the gates were opened. Structurally, is it safe to go over that bridge while the gates are open and water is rushing under? Don't mean to sound crazy.

Hopefully we won't see this again for a long long time. There will many people out sight seeing. It is & will be safe to travel about. As always follow all the rules & listen to the authorities. Just don't drive through water that you can't see the bottom of. Unless you hand someone your beer & say, "Hey y'all watch this". - *just kidding

And if you do hand your beer to someone and say watch this, please make sure they have their phone in the other hand to record whatever it is you are about to do. And make sure they record in landscape mode

How would someone go about getting close enough to see them open the Morganza? Do they block off the roads while opening it? Probably a stupid question, but then again its not like they open it often.

shite. I bought my camp in Pigeon after the 2011 event. Does anyone know how bad it will effect Grand River? My camp is on the outside of the levee a bout a couple hundred yards but is 50' from grand river.
