Finally biting the bullet.

Wondering if the self deploy is worth the extra $$$.
I’ve read good and bad things with the self deploy. Wondering if it’s not worth the possible problems.

Also 24v or 36v?
Current is 24 I believe. Would be easier to plug and play.
Moving a 25ft bay boat.

TIA

I recently bought the Ulterra and love it. I have an 18 ft triton bass boat and would have had to install a slide plate otherwise I’d have torn it up everytime I tried to load and unload it. So glad I went with the Ulterra.

I guess it depends on how much you launch by yourself and if you mind pulling the rope to raise and lower.

I will say whichever one you get you’ll wonder how you made it this long without one.

Hell no. They are finicky and get stuck in deployed mode often. I know several ppl who sold their Ulterra for a Terrova.

I’d say 36v... Hell I put 36v on my 20’
I want to be able to use it all day Nonstop need be.

I have had the ulterra for a year with no issues.
Go 36v if you have room for the extra battery. I believe you will need 36 for the higher thrust

The Terrova deploys very easily. The self deploy isn’t something I’d pay extra for. I could see older people or people with bad backs and not wanting to bend over finding value in it, but deploying the Terrova has never been an aggravation.

Have had the 24v 80# Terrova Riptide for almost exactly 1 year now on a 18’ aluminum. It’s been perfect for what I need it for. Plug in the footpetal when bass fishing and mostly leave it off and roll with just the remote when chasing specks and reds.

36v no question.

The self deploy is great and what most people talk about re: the ulterra, but honestly, the best thing about the trolling motor is the power trim. It’s a game changer.

I would spend the extra and get the Ulterra.

The auto store and deploy is very nice, but as bluemoons mentioned, being able to adjust the height to avoid obstructions is a game changer.

There have been countless times we trim up and allow the wind to slowly blow us over a grass bed only to trim back down once on the other side. Quiet and clean on the other side and never stop fishing.

For a 24 footer I would go 36V.

I personally dont like the self deploy. If it was the same price as the terrova I'd still get the manual. I've been on many a trip where the self deploy had problems of some sort.

24 volt would be ok on that big of a boat if you dont fish offshore, or open water while its windy, or places with high current. Itll work, but it's going to eat batteries on a windy day.

36V Terrova on my 22’ bay boat.

Love it! On the self deploy, I’ve heard spooky stories about it doing things on its own.....just sayin.

Power trim is main reason I went with Ulterra, not auto deploy.

I’ve had a 24v 80lb ulterra for 3 years. There’s been one time it wouldn’t stow and I sprayed some white lithium grease on the metal tracks and it’s never done it again. I know people have had problems with the early generations but I would never trade mine for a terrova. The power trim is so worth it.

Been operating an Ulterra for the past month-using my dad's boat. It has it's good moments, but give me a hand control with bigfoot anyday over a remote operated TM.

the good: being able to retie line and not be up on the front having to control. The heading feature, which is great for trolling a bank.

The bad: anchor mode. That thing will jerk you all around the place. Also, having to hang a giant controller around your neck to move the boat, constantly looking at the remote as the buttons don't seem to become intuitive. big remote also hits against power pole control buttons, making the power pole move when i don;t want it.

I spend more time messing with the remote than with fishing.

I have been running a 36v ulterra on my Majek Illusion towerboat for about 2 years now & I couldn't be happier with it.

I am putting an ulterra on my duck boat. Minn Kota supposedly has the ulterra dialed in and the problems with the auto deploy are supposed to be no more....I bet it ain't true but I am going to roll the dice and find out. I don't want to have to take the blind down to reset decoys or retrieve a bird that the dog can't for some reason and the only way to set decoys in a boat blind is with a trolling motor...it is very quick regardless of wind and current. Controlling the ulterra and deploying and trimming without having to be at the front of the boat will be great as long as it actually deploys LOL...

Something is wrong with it. Spot-lock is rock solid on mine.

That changes with seat time. Once you're familiar with it, it's the best fishing accessory ever made. You need to learn how to use autopilot, cruise control, etc and make all that stuff do the work for you

Agreed. I never use the anchor mode on mine. I clip the remote to my shorts along with my power pole remote. I can run my trolling motor without looking at the remote because I’ve learned where all the buttons are. That stuff just comes with time.

Hand control, foot control, and iPilot all have their respective places. Just depends on what you want and what you like. Jigging Or bass fishing can kinda suck with an iPilot. Everything else is awesome. For sight fishing there really is no alternative once you get used to running the motor.
